QuestionDear Tim, I am a adrenaline junky who mountain bikes.I am often going off big drops and jumps.I have landed on my head several times.I wear a good helmet, pads etc..I am concerned about spinal/neck injury do the collars help?Is there any other form of protection? Thanks for your time. Allen
AnswerHey Allen, Mike Ditka once said that the reason for the increase in spinal cord injuries in football was the increase in protective devices for players. He said that when players begin to feel invincible, they begin to take risks at a level which actually increases their chance of neck injury. The reality is that no equipment can guarantee the safety of an athlete who goes beyond his limits.
I am one of the few people who can honestly say he has been over fifty miles per hour on a bicycle so, I understand the attraction. I am also a person who has spent the last quarter of a century in a wheelchair so I have a clear understanding of what can happen if risks are taken foolishly. The reality is no single thrill is worth a lifetime of paralysis.
As for the collar, I don't know. My advice is to research safety equipment and use the best. But more than that, ride within your limits. There is no gear that can make you invincible. Ride safe so you can ride angain. And it's a good idea to stay on your bike and, off your head.
