ANSWER: hi Dan- this is interesting... I did indeed go to the SciAm site and read your post, sadly I do not know enough about MIDI to give you a proper response.
BUT, my husband is a musician, plays keys as well, has much experience in MIDI controllers and the like. He's out of town playing casino gigs for the next couple of days, but I'd be happy to see what he thinks about it and let you know?
If interested, please ask a follow up question, a 'what did he think' or something. And to be sure I understand the idea, you're proposing using MIDI to control the various devices a quad needs something other than hand control for, bypassing the crappy (technical term...) voice recognition equipment currently out there--is that right?
Thanks for thinking of stuff like this- most people only see the problems in front of them, not those in front of others. I hope to hear back from you and will discuss with my huz when I next talk to him-
thanks!

QUESTION: You are indeed correct. I believe MIDI can be used to control a variety of devices. Not with the clunky manner that voice recognition provides, but with all the precision and subtlety of vocal music.
Answerhi- i tried to add this to my last answer, but just in case...
you ought to post this topic to some disability related sites (if you haven't already)... NewMobility.com has a good forum, and there are others. Most are free to join. You should get good feedback there as the folks reading it are also the ones who NEED it!
