Question
Thank you for your time. I am having a 2 level spinal fusion on my lower back in one month. I know not to smoke or use chewing tobacco while healing. My question is at what time do I need to stop chewing tobacoo prior to my surgery (I only chew once a day). It's a real stress reliever. Please help. Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Anthony,
Thanks so much for your question.

I am glad you know about not using tobacco after spinal fusion because, after doing research on this subject, I found out the healing process may take 6 months or more.

If the 1st fusion doesn't heal properly, having a 2nd fusion or more also begins to lessen the ability to heal properly.

As far as quitting before your surgery, I suggest you stop all tobacco use NOW to give your body a chance to get rid of as much nicotine as possible.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask me anytime.

Thanks again,
John McKinzie
