QuestionI had a mountain bike accident on July 5th, 2008. Have had 2 CT scans with the 2nd one showing (in my opinion) greater damage to T9. It looks to me that T8 is compressing and I have lost about 1/2 inch in height. I am constantly feeling sick and have come off all meds. I saw a specialist a couple of days ago who recommends surgery to fuse T7 to T11 with titanium verses Harrington rods. A friend who has had back surgery recommends a bone graph if at all possible.
What is the down side to either of these options as I feel I am currently at risk of further damage if I do nothing.
Thank you in advance
Answerhi David-
if you can decipher a CT scan you're doing better than i am! if you are still having symptoms though then continuing to pursue it is a good choice.
as for titanium vs stainless rods, the titanium is supposed to be tougher of course- and the bone graft will further stabilize the area. the fusion will limit your range of motion. my neck is fused with steel and bone graft from c3-t1, for example, and i do not have nearly as much ability to look in my side view mirrors. Most of the time i don't notice it, but i would for sure ask your doc how much you could expect to be limited by the surgery
beyond this, the best basic advice i can give is that it's usually worth getting a second opinion if you haven't yet. i've had a couple that made huge differences.
i wish you good luck
