Question

My mom had an accident and damaged her c4 and c5 (cervical area) of her spine. She had a traction and scheduled for operation in cervical area to revive the c4 and c5 vertebra. After 5 days her lungs collapsed and needed a Tracheotomy procedure.

I heard that only minimal cases survive in this procedure. Is there any chances that my mom survive this procedure? We were told to expect the worse scenario...

Thanks..

Answer
Dear Cristine, First off I am so sorry for your family having to go through this. Secondly I am not a doctor, but I am a C4-C5 quadriplegic who also had a tracheotomy. I was injured in 1973, so it is obvious that people do and can survive. I am assuming she has paralysis? I hope this helps you and I will keep good thoughts for your mom. Sincerely, Ken
