QuestionHi Dr. Dr. Man Tran,
I have this weird restless feeling in my back, around my right shoulder. It is not pain, it just feels uneasy, and I feel like the need to press my back.
I went to see a registered massage therapist who diagnosed this as Scar Tissue buildup. He treated my region of discomfort by breaking down the scar tissue. After the massage i just felt mild pain, but just a few days later (now) the irritating discomfort is back.
What can i do to put myself at rest with this issue? I simply cannot sleep all night because the annoying feeling keeps me up. Please help!
My question for you is:
1-How can i treat my scar tissue?
2-Does this sound like scar tissue build up, or could it be something else?
Thank you so much for taking the time to write back. I look forward to hearing from you.
AnswerDear Andy,
From what you have described of your condition, there are 3 differential diagnoses that may contribute to your pain. 1. Scar tissue buildup 2. Trigger points 3. Blood stagnation
Scar tissue: This will occur when there is prior injury to the region. Injury could range from severe trauma such as sprain/strain to repetitive usuage of the involved muscles.
Trigger points: This usually occurs when there is over usage of a muscle. The muslce will become taut or tighten over long period of time creating a hard nodule or "knot." This will produce pain with pressure or a constant ache to the muscle and sharp when irritated.
Blood Stagnation: This dealt with oriental medicine specifically Acupuncture. Again trauma may be the cause for the free flow of blood to staganate and slow down causing pain to the region especially with pressure.
Depending on the appropriate diagnosis of your condition, the treatment may be different.
Scar tissue: Chiropractic and Acupuncture can help by breaking up the scar tissue and promote the proper healing of the injured area.
Trigger point: Chiropractic and Acupuncture can help by breaking up the knot and free the muscle of tension
Blood Stagnation: Acupuncture and Chinese herbs would properly manage this issue.
Massage will temporarily relief the pain but it will return once the muscle tighten up again. It is best to sought management from either a CHIROPRACTOR OR LICENSED ACUPUNCTURIST.
I hope that help.
Good luck,
Dr. Man Tran
