QuestionHi
I have degenerative disc disease which the Consultant surgeon told me was as a result of radiotherapy I had had over 10 years ago for cervical cancer. He said that he had seen in become more apparent in recent years. The damage is L5/S1 and I had to attempts at the pain block injection but had no relief. The surgeon suggested a spinal fusion but did say it may not be successful and I could end up in more pain. I take arthrotec when it becomes too bad. Is there anything else I could take to get better pain relief. What do you know about spinal fusion surgery. Many, many thanks. Annie
AnswerHi Annie and thanks for writing,
I know everyone should avoid Spinal Fusion unless it is absolutely necessary - I have known several people who've had fusion and they ALL regret it and say they wish they never had agreed to it. First of all, the recovery period is long and painful, months of severe discomfort in a brace where you can't get comfortable sitting or lying, and the pain was not relieved that much post surgery.
I would advise you look into every alternative therapy you can to avoid surgery at all costs. Try Chinese Traditional Medicine, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, and look in to Magnets by Nikken (I can provide more info on these if you're interested). Also consult a Chiropractor who practices GENTLE non-aggressive treatments.
I hope this helps and I wish you good health,
Margot
