QuestionI have been suffering from facial nerve damage/pain on the right side since 2002 (I was not diagnosed until October 2006). Despite medications and nerve blocks, I continue to experience constant, excruciating pain. I recently was referred to an acupuncturist. So far, I have had three visitations. On the first two visits the acupuncturist stuck needles on both thumbs, my inner elbows, my neck, and the affected side of my face. I felt temporary relief but the pain quickly returned. On my third visit, she stuck two needles in my right ear and one needle in my left ear. I am supposed to press the needles everytime I feel pain. The problem is that I feel constant pain and even when I press the needles I do not get any relief. I am supposed to have the needles taken out on my next visit, which will be in about 3-4 weeks. It has been two weeks now and they are starting to itch. I forget that needles are in my ear. Therefore, I scratch and as a result, it hurts when I scratch my ear or press the needles. How long can these needles stay in my ear until it is time to take them out? Should I continue these sessions despite its ineffectiveness? During one visit, I felt excruciating pain as the acupuncturist stuck a needle in my face. I actually felt a "shock" sensation; she said that she felt the nerve move.
Would it help to stick a needle in that spot and keep it in for a period of time. Or, would it further aggravate the pain? Thank you
AnswerDear Lisa,
It seems your condition is chronic (4 years). This may requires some sessions and time to see some effect. Different points used on different session is normal.
As far as the ear acupuncture is concerned, typically the "seeds" stay in the ear for about 3-4 days. The longer may cause irritation especially with water getting in from showering. If it irritates you, then peel them off. But if you have concerns about it, feel free to consult with your acupuncturist who has a clear understanding of your management.
Acupuncture needles are usually place in for about 10-30 minutes. It seems the acupuncturist purpose is to stimulate the nerve and the meridian associate with your condition. I don't think having a needle stimulating the area would aggravate but "wake up" the nerve. Inquire more from the acupuncturist as he/she is managing your condition.
