Question
Hello,

Every time I sneeze or bend/stretch awkwardly, it feels like I pull muscles in my chest.  Is this normal?  What muscles are there and can they be extra sensitive?

I'm eighteen if you need to know my age.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi, Laura,

The surface muscles of the chest are the pectorals; the deep muscles which are between ribs, are the intercostals.

If they are sensitized, it's probably because they're in a state of tension (contraction) and sore from muscle fatigue, possibly from a blow to the chest at some time in the past.  They would also be prone to spasm from something like sneezing or laughing.

An article I wrote for practitioners says more.  See www.somatics.com/breathng.htm.

with regard,
