Question
Respected Sir,

I am a 26 years old, male, living and belongs to Pakistan. My BP remains slightly high, always and my waist is 36 inches. I belong to well-to-do family, so the very question of malnutrition or unhygenic conditions does not arise. I have never been in sports or exercise regularly, but periodically, I walk for a week or two and then I become lazy for next three months. Since 5  years back, I have felt that my bones are not only weak but also their texture is not so broad as I have seen my collegues of the same age. My friends who are even one year younger than me are having thick masculature over their arms and legs, and their arms and legs appear bulky, strong compared with my thin arms and thin legs. I wrote that I felt my bones are weak only because whenever I am in queue to pay bills, if someone pushes me, I could not resist. When my wife puts her hands around my neck or puts her head on my chest, I feel that I can not carry the weight of her arms even. When any friend takes hold of my arms, I feel that I am totally occupied. I feel a minor pain in case if someone is on my body, and feel totally weak if someone holds me or my arms, or even shakes hands. I recognized this problem when I was only 20 years old, but at that time, I thought I would be improved as there's still a long way to go. But now, at 26, I think I should have somewhat same bones, same muscles as that of my collegues. I am so embrassed that I can not even wear shorts to avoid my visible thin legs, or can not wear half-sleeves shirt to avoid my visible thin arms. Furthermore, when I keep walking in the college, keep standing for more than two hours, I feel a terrible pain in the sole of my both feet. Whether it is party shoes or oridnary foot-wear, I can not stand more than two hours. I myself is a student of medicine, and am in the last year of being graduated. Here in Pakistan, we, the students, have to wait for long before our number is to be announced for Viva-voce. And having no chair to sit upon, I feel very painful at the site of my sole of feet.

Three days back, I consulted an orthopaedic surgeon who is a FRCS. He asked me to have X rays of chest and X rays of both feet, and also asked me to have some blood-tests. The test revealed that my uric acid level is 7mg/dl (normal range : 4.1- 8mg/dl), my Calcium level is10.11mg/dl (normal range : 8.6- 10.5mg/dl), my WBC count stands 10.4 x 10E9/L (normal range is 4 - 10), my ESR (westergren) is 15mm/hr (normal level is 0 - 15). On seeing the X rays, the surgeon said, " i am not satisfied with the texture of your bones at 26 years ". He further asked me to have Blood Parathormon (pardon my spelling) test and also Vit D test. He also prescribed me Zyloric 300 mg once a day, Urodonol 2Bf x 3, Actnaz 100 mg twice a day. He said, " he wants to investigate the root cause of your weak bones ".

Respected Sir, I think the heredity factor, too,  influences the skeleton of bones. My father has not so broad bones, his arms and legs are same that of me, with a minor difference that he is 58, so his arms are little thicker than me. But apart from heredity, why do I feel weak and can not resist? Why do I have pain in the sole of my foot when I keep standing or walking? I am afraid if there is any complication. Sir, I do not have any access to a foreign doctor, therefore, internet is my last resort and last hope. Please reply in detail, I will remain grateful of you.

Answer
Hello, Yasir,

Sometimes, the answer we get isn't the answer we want to hear.  That doesn't justify disrespecting the answerer.

Sometimes, it is useful to reconsider our own attitude.  I reviewed my answer, below, to check mine.  Having read it, I think that your distress with my answer may result from your own attitude and desire to displace responsibility from yourself onto some outside medical condition.

Sometimes, the answer we get isn't the answer we want to hear, even if it is for our best good.

Hello, Yasir,

You would not feel it if your bones were weak.

It's not your bones, but your muscular system, that is weak.

Bones grow in response to the demands of use.  Your physician, who ordered all these blood tests, has missed the obvious.  You need much more movement in your life.

As to the pain in the soles of your feet, I can't answer in the abstract, without seeing you.  Usually, however, that arises from improper foot-plant on the ground.

I would suggest, at your stage, that you resume walking as a discipline and stay with it.  In addition, I would recommend neuromuscular conditioning (for coordination, flexibility, and secondarily, strength), in the form of somatic exercises.

You may learn more about somatic education at somatics.com/page4b.htm.

Good wishes,
Lawrence Gold
