Aching in right upper arm and sholder

Question
I started having a very slight ping like feeling in my upper right arm the begining of Oct. of this year. My primary Doctor had me go for an x-ray, and it came back normal, so he said "Just take Ibuprohen", but it has gotten worse. It bothers me most at night and I can't sleep well on the right side where my sholder has more pressure on it. During the day it seems to be better, but I have to be careful not to reach out for anything, or use my right arm incorrectly. If I reach up to put something over my head it really hurts more for about a second. I am so tired because of it, and would really appreciate your help. I am 71. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Patricia

I just noticed this question in the "question pool" of unanswered questions and thought I would respond.

The x-ray coming back normal just means there is no fracture or dislocation, but does not mean there isn't some soft tissue irritation or other problem.

Since the pain has not resolved with anti-inflammatory medication, your doctor needs to take the next step.

One possibility would be an MRI to assess for possible problems including rotator cuff problems. It might be just as helpful to ask for a referral to a physical therapist to be evaluated for range of motion, strength, etc. of the shoulder. There are some specific corrective exercises they can give you to do for the shoulder.

When you go back to your doctor, don't let him tell you to just keep taking Ibuprofen, and don't let him just give you a stronger pain medication without finding out what the problem is first. If you think it would help, consider having someone go to the doctor with you who can help make sure he understands what you need.

Best wishes
