I was asked by an acquaintance to inquire for a 55 year old friend who takes tincture of opium and an opium patch by Rx for pain management resulting from a serious bowel problem.  The cost of this medication has become impossible.  Is there an alternative medication available or can acupuncture offer this individual some relief?

There are certain herbs along with acupuncture treatments that can help with the pain.  However, it would depend on the cause of the pain.  The only way to know is to visit an acupuncturist or Chinese herbal office for a consultation.
