Hello Doctor...

I'm Jagmohan Singh, i'm from PUNJAB,INDIA and i'm talking on behalf of my very dear friend DAVINDER SINGH. He has a problem of Ankylosing Spondylitis, and he had also resulted (+ve) in HLAB27. He had undergone certain tests which shows:

1. Uric Acid = 6.49 (which should be 2.5 normally)
2. E.S.R = 38 (which should be 0.0 normally)

He is having continuous back pains every day, or a day after two. It become very difficult for him to continue his daily healthy routine. Can you please help us to reduce the pain that he's been undergoing daily. Please assist us with some effective exercises which he should do so that he can get rid of that pain, and also, might help in the repositioning of the disc and also URIC ACID and E.S.R to get back to their normal numbers.

I'm also attaching one of the pictures that might help you in recognizing the Problem. We have been to the some of the good doctors over here, and they were telling us to undergo operation, which will at least cost us over 8 Lakh Rupees(Indian currency), which will not be possible for us to pay. So please help us in this issue. We'll be very thankful to you.

Thanks & Regards
Jagmohan Singh & Davinder Singh

Answer
Dear Jagmohan,

The picture you attached is not AS (ankylosing spondylitis).  It shows the nerve root being impinged from disc pushing against it.  As for the AS, you can try heat or cold.  One or the other may help.  If your friend can without pain, do some exercise (light) for the low back.  Bend forward and backward which can help the spine since movement will help with the inflammation and prevent the spine from being stiffen up.

There are medications that can help with the inflammation as well.  These are usually NSAIDs.  I am not specialized in medications so you may want to address this concern to an arthritis expert.
