scoliosis and abdominal pain

Question
My mom is 74 years old and has severe scoliosis.  She has been seeing a physical therapist for a couple of months trying to find relief.  She has been experiencing pain in her right side (lower abs) off and on for a year.  Today she says it is a more consistent pain than it has ever been.  She thinks it is related to her scoliosis and the fact that her body is shrinking, and there just isn't room inside of her body for all the organs.  She had her gall bladder removed about 10 years ago, so that rules out anything with that.

She says she isn't experiencing any vomiting or fever.  She took an ibuprofin but it hasn't helped ease the pain.

I would appreciate any help on what to do
Thank you,

Answer
It definitely does sound related to the scoliosis pain, however, I understand your concern. It could possibly be a sign of appendicitis if, and only if, she has a fever accompanied by nausea. Otherwise, it sounds like one of the abdominal muscles that are going into spasms since she has had this for over a year. Just to be on the safe side, look out for any signs of nausea along with fever in which case you would want to seek medical care immediately, as it could be acute appendicitis.
