QuestionI'm submitting this question on behalf of my local volunteer fire dept. and rescue squad; we have heard too many conflicting answers...may a adult collecting SSI disability payments volunteer to join and paticipate in a non-profit community volunteer fire/rescue department? We want these citizens, but can we allow them to and can they legally volunteer if they cannot work? We are located in New Jersey...feel free to email the fire dept. at: LLVFC

AnswerIn one word YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
While I'm what they call an "expert" in the field of disabilities, however my "hobby" for lack of better word is EMS. Savvy in both fields.
A person on SSI can do volunteer work, they must watch out of any earnings (which you don't get when you volunteer). This also goes for people on ssa (Social Security Disability) which is different than SSI. As matter of fact my kid brother (who is legally blind) did it for years, as an EMT for a volunteer fire dept.
As an ARC Emergency Responder Instructor Trainer and disaster volunteer, I've recruited and trained people with a variety of disabilities to serve in different functions. The disabled community is a great resource for volunteers.
Please feel free to contact me directly by e-mail if you have any questions, or would like to communicate with some one who has done it. Can also assist with any technical assist you might need for training, accessibility, or equipment modifications. Would even be happy to talk by phone.
Good Luck
Robin
