Question
Hello, I am a disabled/retired police officer that is permantly/totally disabled due to an on the job injury in Nov 1994.Since then, I have been through A divorce, my credit rating has been wrecked due to monumental medical bill's, and my health has gone downhill.
I have A seven year old son who stay's with me part time, and I am staying in A mobile home that belongs to some friend's that is in very bad disrepair and is barely liveable, not to mention in A bad neighborhood where I cannot let my son out to play .
I have considerable experience in home repair and was working A second job with my own home repair/handyman business in addition to my job as A police officer. This was prior to my on the job accident with the police dept. so I know almost all aspect's of home repair/improvement. but, am limited in my ability to physically perform some of the work now as well as VERY financially limited.
My question is-do you or any of your colleagues know of any government "or private" resources where someone in my situation "on Soc. security-disability" can obtain home financing on A limited income? "I also have A small amount of police pension [less than $500.00 per mo.] my Soc. SEC disability is approx. $750.00 per MO. I would be willing to get something in need of repair if this would help. in fact, this would be preferable!
I have never had to resort to anything like this but, since the injury, not only has my physical health suffered, but my credit rating has been ruined. I previously had good credit and paid off one mobile home "in full!"
The small mobile that I'm in now is far beyond any type of reasonable repair, and I find "for the first time in my life" that I am afraid for my son and myself living in the neighborhood that I'm in at the present time. it is also difficult for me to get to my doctor's that treat my medical condition's as it is A minimum of A 3-4 hour commute round trip. "my doctor's are in Tulsa Okla."
Any info you could provide as far as government or private resources would be so greatly appreciated! I've tried looking on the WWW. however, it is A daunting challenge with the distraction of A chronic pain condition, the numerous back/neck surgeries, the constant worry of my son's situation, and last but not least, "my destroyed credit." I would even be open to some constructive criticism!        I just know that I want my son to be able to live in A "decent" [nothing fancy]! Home where he can flourish and be A little boy. to do thing's every little boy want's "and need's" to do! He didn't ask to be put in this situation of living in unsafe housing in an unsafe neighborhood!
I feel terribly responsible for his situation and am willing to swallow my pride to find some type of housing where he can have someplace to call "home" where he can play outside without fear and live in A home that is "warm in the winter" and "cool in the summer."
Please excuse me for being longwinded! but one last and "VERY IMPORTANT" point I want to make, I/WE are not looking for A handout!!!, As I said before, I am more than willing to find something that is in need of repair. "minor or major" and I am willing to make any monthly payment's that is in anyway affordable based on my income. at the present time, I am still having to pay for my prescription med.'s out of pocket in addition to my other medical bill's for A morphine infusion pain pump, numerous medical procedures, and other misc. DR. bill's.
These are all expenses that the state worker's comp system should have covered, but haven't. Without A doubt we wouldn't be in this situation if they had met their "LEGAL AND ETHICAL" responsibilities. but, that's another issue for another Expert. However, if you know an expert in the area of worker's comp,"PLEASE" pass them A copy of this letter!
The med.'s do take A chunk of money but, there is surely something that I could afford "especially A fixer upper" that would leave us enough to pay utilities and grocery's. My only other option "that I can see",is to relinquish custody of any kind and this is not an option I can live with!
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my question! I apologize for the excessive content of the letter. I hope and pray that there is some resource out there that will fit our situation.
                                              Yours truly,

Answer
Bob,
It is hard to believe that our police officers and firemen are not being adequately provided for after a line of duty injury.
There is a government agency whose responsiblty to provide safe, sanitary and affordable housing. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.)is charged with that.
HUD is an umbrella agency for a number of departments dealing with housing, one of theres departments is the Community Development Department. They target funds for housing to be used in a number of ways such as: residential low imterest rehabilitation for single and multi-family units loans, mortgage buy down programs etc. The disabled population is a targeted population who is to benefit from these programs.
You can also call your local advocacy organization who may also be able to provide you with information.
I wish I could be more help to you, but just keep asking questions till you get answers you need, those answers are out there.
Sincerely,

Chester
