Question
I have als with very limited use of my legs and unfortunately it has now spread to my arms. Is there any equipment that will lift me up off the toilet enough to pull up my undergarments and pants? Up until recently, I could use my arms to raise myself enough so the caregiver could pull things up and down. I use a transfer board to move from the wheelchair to the toilet chair. I also sometimes use my standing frame to transfer. All of the lifts I have seen have a sling under your bottom which defeats the purpose (now you have sling in the way) I tried a hoyer lift, but I hated it. Have you seen The Lift from Prime Engineering? It looks like a human dolly, you are leaned forward at an angle with no strap under your butt. Is there anything out there? I have asked my pt and medical equipment supplier, but no one has any easy answers. I am too young and too proud to move to depends.
Thank you for any ideas.

Answer
OK, remember that I am an Adaptive Tech, not a therapist or a Rehab Engineer, OK- these are just ideas and thoughts, not recommendations.

There are several models of transfer machines that work by bending you over the machine instead of lifting you up- and they might work nicely.

Another option would be a frame that would hold your lower legs in place while the attendant leans you forward to cleanse and dress. If you investigate this option, make sure it includes a safety feature to prevent you falling forward.

I am kinda wondering why your caregiver cannot use a gait belt and just lean you over, but I know this is a problem sometimes- sometimes because of mechanical leverages, sometimes because of an unwillingless to go that route. This is what we do at work most of the time.

If you know a seamstress, you can try to have a vest or harness-type harness rigged up for a more traditional lift.

Nothing else pops to mind right now.

Good luck!
