QuestionHi,
I have a dear friend who is on government disability.
I would like to leave her $100,000 in my will. Would doing so cause her to lose her disability payments?
Her monthly payment and very considerable medicare and prescription coverage (she is under 65) are such that it would not be worth it to inherit the money if she lost these. (There may be ways to indirectly get her the money, but obviously I'd prefer to give her the money directly if it wouldn't negate her disability payment, medicare, etc.0
So, my question: Can my friend inherit the money without jeopardizing her payments, etc.
Many thanks for your help.
Steve
AnswerHi Steve.
I have seen folks inherit money and lose their Medicaid benefit, but I have to admit that my expertise is not in Medicaid funding.
Any chance you could give the money while you're alive? You may be able to set up a "special needs trust" which would allow for some additional protections. I would suggest that you contact an attorney who specializes in this type of arrangement to learn more.
I hope this information is helpful.
