Can disabled person inherit money without losing payments?

Question
Hi,

I have a dear friend who is on government disability.

I would like to leave her $100,000 in my will. Would doing so cause her to lose her disability payments?

Her monthly payment and very considerable medicare and prescription coverage (she is under 65) are such that it would not be worth it to inherit the money if she lost these. (There may be ways to indirectly get her the money, but obviously I'd prefer to give her the money directly if it wouldn't negate her disability payment, medicare, etc.0

So, my question: Can my friend inherit the money without jeopardizing her payments, etc.

Many thanks for your help.

Answer
Steve,

This question is best answered by an attorney. I know in NY you can receive up to 10,000 in the form of a gift without penalty. I'm sure in this economy the government would try to get some of that money. So again an attorney would be your best bet.
