Question1. I'm considering going to a chiropractor for frequent pain in my lower back, I think due to work, sitting at the computer. I've been having lower back pain for some time now and stretching seems to only help a little bit. I've heard many mixed views about going to a Chiropractor. Some say it helps them, some say it's really bad for you and it could cause strokes or could permenantly damage you? Could it possibly help me? So I'm a little confused as to whether I should try one out. Maybe you can answer some of my questions to ease my anxiety about going to a Chiropractor
AnswerThere is a large body of scientific research, much of it published in major medical (not chiropractic) journals, showing that chiropractic treatment is more effective for treating lower back pain than any other approach AND is extremely safe--much safer than taking anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. The chances of permanent damage from chiropractic treatment are much smaller than those of being hit by lightening. On the other hand, the chances of feeling better when you have lower back pain are probably 8 out of 10; higher if you see a really good chiropractor, who will give you chiropractic treatment AND advice about exercise, posture and maybe diet.
To find a good doctor of chiropractic, get a referral from a friend who has had a good experience, or contact the American Chiropractic Association (http://www.amerchiro.org/) 800/986-4636
Good luck!
