Question I recently began working full time in front of a computer. My upper back/ lower neck has been hurting for the past six weeks any time I sit at my desk. I went to a physical therapist and they told me it was probably due to posture. So they had me do exercises, which haven't seemed to help much. Is this something I should see a chiropractor about? I'm only 22 years old and just got into the work force, and since my degree is in IT, I plan to continue sitting in front of a computer a lot.
AnswerWorking on your posture is important, and exercises to strengthen your postural support muscles are a good idea, and hopefully the physical therapist taught you about good ergonomic positions for computer work. But if you're still having problems, seeing a good chiropractor is wise, since you may have some spinal joint restrictions that are surfacing when you sit.
Unless you have a history of serious injury, spinal x-rays should not be necessary at your age. If chiropractic treatment helps, you should feel some significant improvement within the first 4 to six treatments. Altogether, a treatment program of twice weekly for up to a month and once/week for another month or so would be reasonable, as long as you are feeling benefit within the first 2-3 weeks.
