QuestionI have been a nurse for 27 years. I have had back pain for 7 years that I thought was just a perk of this job. :) Herniated L5 was found incidentally when I had an MRI for something else. This was not addressed by that doctor. I know nothing about orthopedics and am having alot of trouble at this point. What kind of doctor should I start out with?
AnswerUnless you have severe neurologic symptoms (like weakness and severe pain or numbness in a leg) I suggest you find a good chiropractor who combines diversified manipulation with guidance in spinal rehabilitation (ie exercise!).
Spinal manipulation with appropriate exercise is usually the best remedy for chronic back pain. Treatment may require visits up to 3 times weekly for the first month, by which time you should experience some noticeable improvement. If you do, further treatment with diminishing frequency will most likely be necessary.
