Question
my girlfriend visited a chiropractor at a local clinic where i am from. he treated her twice and said if the second treatment did not help within a week he would have to put the coccix bone back into place through a procedure involving anal entry. Due to the nature of his personal demeaner and lack of professionalism i was inclined to get a second opinion. i am curious as to how routine a procedure this is and if the fact that she is in constant excruciating pain  in her upper buttock area/lower back could be treated any other way. Also what would be the best over the counter medication to treat the pain until we can cover the cost. she has had a slipped disk in the past, about ten years ago. any information is helpful, thank you.

Answer
There is a chiropractic technique like you describe--I have done it very rarely in 25 years of practice.  Most upper buttock/lower back pain does NOT come from the coccyx but from restricted movement in joints of the lower back.  Chiropratic treatment can be very helpful in many cases like this, although it may take treatment over several weeks to 2-3 months to fully resolve the problem.  However, there should be some relief within the first 2- 4 visits.

Meanwhile, frequent application of ice packs can be very helpful, along with gently stretching--like lying on the back and pulling the knees to the chest.  Taking 2- 4,000 mg/day of vitamin C is also a good thing--it promotes healing and reduces inflammation.  I am not an expert in OTC medication, and it does not cure the problem, but taking 2 Allieve every 12 hrs or 4 ibuprofen 3-4 times/day might help temporarily---but should not take for more than 3-5 days!

If you and your girlfriend don't feel comfortable with the chiropractor, find a different one!!
