Chiropractic care for thyroid?

Question
Dear Mr. Botnick:

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism (my TSH measured at 60 -- very high).  While searching for information about this disorder on the internet, I came across more than one site that recommended chiropractic care for the treatment of hypothyroidism.  In your experience, is it true that chiropractic spinal adjustments can help the thyroid gland function better?  I have started taking the thyroid replacement meds, as well as some additional iodine and L-tyrosine.  Would you suggest that I also see a chiropractor as well?  Thank you for any input you may have.  Sonia

Answer
Sonia:

There is no evidence that chiropractic manipulation can help hypothyroidism and that DC should not have made the claim.  The advertising you came across is false and very misleading.  It would also injure someone by inducing them to get unnecessary neck manipulations (which have a risk of stroke) and if they put off medical treatment to try chiropractic (delay in referral).

You should file a complaint with the state licensing board where that chiropractor is licensed so nobody else is misled.
