Question
I started having problems about 3 months ago where I felt like I could not breath properly for every time I went to breath out I felt like I had to move my jaw and let air squelch down from my ear to my throat...every time I breathed out it was like air was trapped behind the ear and jaw...i would open my mouth so much and push air out that in the end it would feel like my eustachian tubes would totally close up and all my muscles in my neck woyuld pull up under my ears and it felt like there was no air ventilating from ears nose and down the throat ,....my diaphram would feel very tight and I felt like I was getting no air and yet I was not breathless from the lung only from the ears and throat.
Went to ent who looked down my nose and throat and said every thing looked ok ...had 2 spiromitors done by local do\ctor and one from plumologist all 3 showed above average lung capacity ...I am a 50 yeAR OLD aUSTRALIAN WOMAN ANd have been diagnosed with sinusitis ... walk 1one and a half hours every day my question is....could this be related to my lungs ..I have no asthma so why would my ears make me feel like I am not getting enough air yet I am not getting breathless in the chest....my peak flows range from 550 to 700 ...could hyperventilation cause these symptoms? Please reply thank you.
The doctors btend to think that it is coming from my neck muscles around under my nears and also a jaw problem...I have to admit these feelings are brought on worse if i am sitting typing at the computer all day ..i get a pulled up painful feeling from between the shoulder blades up under the skull and mthe musclews at the back of my neck hurt and burn...could these muscles affect my ears?
?

Answer
Hello Dawn,

You may want to see a Doctor of Chiropractic for a exam and treatment of the cervical spine.  I have found in many cases treating the uppper cervical spine and surrounding musculature can be very beneficial.  I would ask the Doctor if they perform extensive myofascial work as part of their treatment, it can be of great benefit to have the posterior cerival, anterior cervical, and muscles surrounding the jaw treated.
Chronic sinusitis (especially if an infection was the onset of your condition)can be a underlying cause too.  You may want to avoid dairy, sugar, and greasy foods.  This will decrease the mucus production that is associated with these foods.  I would discuss a dietary change and any beneficial supplements/herbs with your doctor.

Let me know how everything turns out!
