Question
I started having problems about 3 months ago where I felt like I could not breath properly for every time I went to breath out I felt like I had to move my jaw and let air squelch down from my ear to my throat...every time I breathed out it was like air was trapped behind the ear and jaw...i would open my mouth so much and push air out that in the end it would feel like my eustachian tubes would totally close up and all my muscles in my neck woyuld pull up under my ears and it felt like there was no air ventilating from ears nose and down the throat ,....my diaphram would feel very tight and I felt like I was getting no air and yet I was not breathless from the lung only from the ears and throat.
Went to ent who looked down my nose and throat and said every thing looked ok ...had 2 spiromitors done by local do\ctor and one from plumologist all 3 showed above average lung capacity ...I am a 50 yeAR OLD aUSTRALIAN WOMAN ANd have been diagnosed with sinusitis ... walk 1one and a half hours every day my question is....could this be related to my lungs ..I have no asthma so why would my ears make me feel like I am not getting enough air yet I am not getting breathless in the chest....my peak flows range from 550 to 700 ...could hyperventilation cause these symptoms? Please reply thank you.
The doctors btend to think that it is coming from my neck muscles around under my nears and also a jaw problem...I have to admit these feelings are brought on worse if i am sitting typing at the computer all day ..i get a pulled up painful feeling from between the shoulder blades up under the skull and mthe musclews at the back of my neck hurt and burn...could these muscles affect my ears?
?

Answer
Dear Dawn,

I am very sorry that this has taken so long to get back to you.  I normally reply the same day but I have been out of town and then could not get hooked up to the allexperts.com site to answer your question.

It sounds like you definitely have some muscular problems going on up in the neck and into the jaw and facial muscles. The feeling between the shoulder blades is most likely referred pain from the neck which will also cause pain and muscle spasm into the jaw, back of the head and can possibly cause the sensation you are feeling in the ears.  I have treated many patients for the same symptoms and they have come back saying that their ears feel better and they are hearing better.

Additionally, sinus infections will cause neck pain, jaw and ear pain and headache similar to this.  I do not think that you have a lung problem.  The problem you had getting air through the mouth, nose and throat definitely sounds like a sinus infection and swelling problem.  You need to take some antibiotics to rid the infection and then you can go to natural supplements to maintain the sinus passages.  I recommend Vitamin C at 5000mg per day, Quercitin and L-Cysteine which help fight inflammation and decrease mucus production.

The air being trapped in the eustachian tubes was most likely due to fluid in the tube itself.  The antibiotic should help eliminate this.

I also recommend several visits to the chiropractor to elminate the neck, shoulder, jaw and head pain and spasms.  You need several cervical and thoracic adjustments to resolve this problem.  Then you can go back to feeling good and being active again.

Again, I am sorry about the delay and I hope this helps.

Good luck and God Bless,

Dr. Boss
