will treatment from a chiropractor be effective for me

Question
I have been treated in the past by osteopaths and physiotherapists.  Over the last 6 years by physio's on and off.  One of my sacro-iliac joints siezes, the associated muscle spasm gives me a lot of pain in my lower back, hip, bottom, and sometimes sciatic pain down the legs. I have two lower discs that are aggreviated by this and have displaced requiring manipulation.  Over recent years the trouble does tend to be with the sacro-iliac joint alone.  Also whilst pregnant with my second child I had a separated public sympasis.  My daughter is 17th months old and I am still having to have manipulation to align my pelvis and pubic area.

The physio I attend is a 50 minute drive away and I often find having sat in an upright position just after manipulation for so long, by the time I get home, displacement has occurred again.  There is a chiropractor 6 miles away, so if a chiropractor can help this kind of problem, it would make sense to seek treatment from them.

Answer
Dear Julie,

Thank you for your question and I am so sorry that you are having these problems.  Yes, the chiropractor can help with this problem and you may find that the chiropractic manipulation is a little more effective.

I say this because many PT manipulations are more of the long lever type movements, whereas most chiropractic manipulations are short lever, high thrust movements.  These tend to be better for SI joints as they create more specific movement directed at the joint in question.  The end result is often times more improvement in a shorter period of time.  I see many patients just like you.  You are also going to need to be on a strengthening program to strengthen the supporting musculature and tighten the supportive ligaments of the sacroiliac joints and pubic regions.

I recommend seeing the chiropractor, telling him of your condition and past history and feel him out so to speak.  Have a few treatments and see what you think.  I think you will be pleased and see improvement, but if you don't find another DC or go back to your PT if you are getting the results you want.

I hope this helps and you do well.  If you have any other questions, contact me through allexperts.com.

God Bless,

Dr. Boss
