What could be causing clicking and popping in the neck which started about 1 month ago?

Thanks for the wuestion.  Many things can cause clicking and popping in the neck on movement.  It can be tendon snapping, degenerative changes in the joints or discs, or joint dysfunction. The key here is that it is not normal.  I recommend consulting a chiropractor as this would be the best approach to this type of condition. Do this to make sure that there is nothing more serious that could end in more problems.
