Questioncan help be given to a patient who suffers from spinal stenosis?
AnswerLewis,
Thanks for the question. Spinal stenosis is definitely a tough condition to treat and manage. The problem is that spinal stenosis is when the actual space holding the spinal cord and nerves narrows. If it narrows too much, there is constant irritation and pressure on the cord and nerves. I have treated spinal stenosis patients in the past with therapy, stretching and acupuncture with decent results. The treatment is usually palliative and the patient is seen on an as needed basis.
If pain and symptoms become too much to handle, a surgical laminectomy may be the only answer. This is where they actually remove the posterior portion of the involved spinal vertebrae to relieve the pressure on the cord and nerves. It is a big surgery, but often the only answer.
I hope this helps.
