Sciatic nerve and Lower Back Pain

Question
I am a 55 year old male in fairly good overall health. I have been driving an 18 wheel truck for the last 15 years. Several weeks ago I developed an excruciating pain in my right buttock and down the back of my leg to my foot. I called my MD and explained my symtoms and he said I probably had an inflammed sciatic nerve. He suggested NSAIDs and changing the position I was sitting in. The pain subsided somewhat. Upon return I made an appointment for a check up and x-rays. They revealed hip bone structure ok and the spine showed a slight compression in the #3 & #4 lumbar disc which he said could be causing my problem. I was told if I continued to have a problem he would refer me for a MRI and a Back surgeon. The inflammation seems to be better but the lower back pain is still there. I do not want to have surgery unless absolutley necessary. Do you think that I may benefit by consulting a Chiropractor for this condition before going to see a surgeon? Thank you very much for your time. Don Jennings

Answer
Hello Don,

Yes, definately go see a doctor of chiropractic!  They specialize in the biomechics of the spine and all the joints in the body.  You may want to find a doctor who specializes in soft tissue injuries due to the fact you may have altered biomechanics from imbalanced muscles which may also impinge the nerve.

Hope all goes well,
Dr. Brendon O'Brien D.C.
