Question
I was born with my shoulder-blades out of place. Meaning I can push my arm back and my shoulder blades push back with them. It's not too uncommon off a problem, assuming it "is" a problem, because the majority of people have normal shoulders and shoulder-blades. I've met a few people over the years that could do this also. It troubles me because I find it very taxing to hold my posture for long extended periods of time. I've tried to push my shoulder against a flat surface and have someone push on the blade; there is a painful resistance but it feels like it wants to pop into place, THEN, my arm feels like it pops out of socket(something else I've been able to do since a child)...what, if anything is wrong with my shoulders and sockets? Is there any sort of surgury or treatment that could aid in the recovery of my normal posture, or the normal functioning of my joints and shoulder-blades?

Answer
Hello Mark,

Hard to tell what is genetic vs. weakness in the shoulders.  Most common is the Serratus muscle being weak causing the scapula to wing or stick out.  Strengthening this muscle helps pull the shoulder blades in.  MRI of the shoulders would reveal any other possible causes.

Have a great day,
