QuestionHi Cynthia,
What should I do about my hip flexors which were overdeveloped performing exercises? Now these have caused an exaggerated back and back pain. I also have problem with my posture now. Please help.
AnswerThe simple answer is stretch, do some yoga, pilates, and build up your core muscles. If these muscles were developed at a young age, you may have altered the formation of your spine, creating exagerated curves - this can not be changed. The chance are, your problems don't only stem from some overdeveloped muscles. You can also get some great results by having a deep tissue massage of the area. When muscles are bundled tight for a long time the tissue tends to form adhesions, like glue. If a massage therapist can get in there and tear things up it will really kick start your recovery. The stretching is absolutly essential, as is the building of other core muscles. You have an imbalance, don't be afraid to gain muscle in other areas to compensate. You massage therapist can help you determine these muscles. By the way, be sure you see a 'Massage Therapist' not a pleasure massage.
I know these things take some cash, but it is worth it! If nothing else, check out some Yoga DVDs from the library.
Good Luck!!
