QuestionWe have always slept on a firm mattress. I just bought a new mattress. It is firm, but with a pillow top. I thought it was very comfortable, but he does not agree and says it is not good for his back. Do you know what type of mattress is best for neck and back pain. He is a welder in his 40s and stands most of the day on cement. I would be grateful for an answer.
AnswerSally,
Mattress firmness is a bit of a contraversy, and the professional opinion changes as fast as you can form one. The latest research concerning low back pain and firmness of a matress indicates that a medium matress or one that is not considered firm nor soft but right in the middle is the most effective for relieving low back pain. The problem I have in referring a patient to purchase a particular mattress is that as soon as I make a recommendation that person will find that they are pain free with a very soft one or a very hard mattress. All people are so different in how they respond. I can tell you if you are average or your husband is average then research shows you will see an improvement in sleep and Low Back Pain with a mattress right down the middle in regards to firmness. I apologize for the delay in getting this to you and welcome any other questions if I can be of help let me know!
