QuestionAbout 6 months ago i started experiencing discomfort in my shoulder. Two months ago i decided to go to an orthopaedic surgeon who took x-rays and said i had a small bone projecting from the shoulder blade and it needed surgery. Deciding to go for a second opinion first i was then told by my GP to visit a physiotherapist who diagnosed a torn tendon. My symptoms are: pain, frozen shoulder, no sleeping at night and general discomfort from the shoulder down to my elbow.
I have been to her 4 times now and had acupuncture once.
My question is: The pain is now more intense and the discomfort level is about the same. Am i wasting my time and/or is there another remedy for this? Also is there anything i can take to help speed up recover?
Thank you.
AnswerNicky,
It sounds to me like you have a bone spur at the acromion process, a semi-circular portion of bone at the top/outer part of your shoulder blade. I'm assuming this because that's what often causes shoulder pain as the rotator cuff tendon gets dragged across it with reaching/pulling motions or bangs against it when the arm is placed overhead. If the spur is big and is tearing into the tendon, then you may do well to consider the orthopedic recommendation. Acupuncture is not likely to help. Have you had a cortisone injection? For some people that helps reduce the pain. P.T. procedures will be limited since you have a spur and a tear. Not knowing more about your shoulder anatomy and your age/biologic profile, there's little more I can offer. If you are to get a 2nd opinion, see an orthopedist that specializes in the shoulder.
'Good luck,
