QuestionDear Sir,
My Sister, Ms. Malathi is carrying child, for 22 weeks 2days. Her Obstetric Ulstrasonography shows the following ciritcal observations.
Impressions:
============
22 weeks 2 days aged Single live gestation(Calculated from LMP) showing 21weeks 3days size(50th percentile). This indicates ultrasound growth correlation with menstrual age. =? cervical hemivertebrae for post natal radiological

That report also reveals the "Suggestion of low cervical region hemivertebrae noted(consequent subtle angular scoliosis)."
Note: Thick maternal anterior abdominal wall precludes thorough visualisation of the foetus - Harmonic imaging used.
Sir, we were told that the child may have to be operated for the problems pertaining to scoliosis. Sir, please let us know the detailed picture of this problem. If so, then what are the treatments ought to be taken for this problem. Will there be any deformities in the external appearance of the child at the time of birth? or after that.? Will it affect spinal system and verterbal system? or what are the parts that could be affected with this problems? Thank you.
yours truly,
Sendhil Kumar
AnswerHi Sendhil,
This is a first for me. I've been in practice for nearly 30 years and have never heard of an observation like this in the womb. I've certainly never heard of prenatal surgical considerations for such.
Now, this is not my field, but I would advise very careful consultation with other specialists familiar with this situation. There are many hemivertebrate individuals that generally do not even know about it until they have an xray for some minor injury.
Chiropractic doctors do not do surgery. I am impressed with the early observation. But continue to investigate.
Sorry that I am not more help.
