QuestionDr. Newhart,
About a week ago, I noticed some pain in my upper back that felt as if someone was pulling on my neck muscles. Then I noticed some tingling/pain in both my right and left hands (more so in my right). Is this a classic sign of a pinched nerve? I recently bought a new car and the seat is a bit different (not as much support) from my last car so I am not sure if that is helping the situation. Also, about a 3 weeks ago, I did some exterior painting on my house and did a lot of reaching with an extension pole. I am at a desk all day and I do try to get up and stretch, but the feeling is still there. I have been taking Ibuprofen and that seems to help a bit. Should I just wait it out or see someone to find out what is going on? Thank you.
AnswerI would try and find a good chiropractor. You describe signs of the traditional "pinched nerve". Coupled with a new seat in a car (which can have a lot to do with back problems, and the extended amount of reaching, it is possible that you have a misalignment causing this. A good chiro. should be able to diagnose and treat this, as well as set you up in a good rehab program to strengthen your condition.
