QuestionDear Doctor,
About a month ago I tore the Long Head of my biceps Tendon. The question I need answered is whether or not to have the tendon surgically repaired. I have been told that I do not need it repaired, however I am having trouble accepting that. I am extremely active, and only 28 years old. I am involved in intense weight training and need to have clearance for military training. What the best route to take?
AnswerHello RT,
This question is best answered by an orthopedic surgeon, but I'll give my two cents.
Torn tendon (completely torn)- needs surgical repair.
Long head of the biceps tendon- some people live and function with a torn tendon, some look for surgical repair.
Depending upon the type of activities you do and the intensity, only you can decide whether to go through surgery. Surgery and rehab will take time- months even a year to feel well again.
Military training? depending upon your job (what do they call it in service 'mos' ? ) , you may or may not necessarily need repair. Only a doctor (orthopedist, physiatrist) with military knowledge can tell you if you HAVE to have the surgery.
Sorry so wishy-washy, but the answer to this is definitely case by case, and I have no knowledge as to the military job requirements you face- find a doctor that does.
Hope this helps a little.
