Question
I recently injured my low back during training for an upcoming triathlon.  I went to a chiropractor and my x-ray showed 0% natural curve in my neck, scoliosis in my lower back, and an exaggerated natural curve in my lower back.  After the examination, the chiro found that my right hip flexor was very tight and was most likely causing my low back pain.

I've been in several car accidents throughout my life (the most recent accident in 2002)and have seen chiropractors off and on for treatment after these accidents.  The chiropractor I am currently seeing has advised me to stop all training and not attempt the triathlon in August.  I don't want to do this.  I'm willing to decrease my cross-training and spend more time in the pool than on my bike or running.  I am doing physical therapy exercises for my lower back and icing a couple times a day.  He also wants me to begin 3 treatments a week.  I can't afford that, but can do 1 treatment a week.  Do you think I will be able to continue a reduced training schedule and still race in August?  Do you think once a week treatments will suffice to allow me to race?

Thank you very much,

Annsley

Answer
Hey Annsley,

You may want to get a MRI, to see if the disc, facet, soft tissue is injured.  X-rays only show bone etc as you saw.  If the disc is bulging/prolapsed then you may want to take some time off depending on the size of the bulge etc.  But if you feel like you can train right now and it's not setting you back, keep it up!  Active recovery is the best. Like you stated, may want to start back in the pool for the first couple weeks, then get back to normal training for the tri.
Ice before and after workouts, drink tons of water, and a Glucosamine/Chondriton complex supplement may help too.

Have a great day,
