QuestionQUESTION: I live on Staten Island and I am happy to find you on this website. I know you are an 'expert', I remember all the news about you being first in the hospital, and Prevention magazine. I am also a parent of a former high school football player, I remember years ago watching you tape one of your Curtis players. I have back, neck, and knee problems; have never been to a chiro. Do you do the kinesio taping I saw on TV at the Olympics? I am interested, particularly for my knee problem, if it keeps them (Olympics) jumping, I hope it will keep me walking.
Thanks, maybe I will see you soon.
Patricia
ANSWER: kinesio tape, taping, staten island kinesio taping, kinesio, staten island chiropractic, staten island chiropractor, dr. victor dolan, staten island high school football, kinesiotaping, knee injury, knee taping,
Hello Patricia,
Sorry to hear of your problems/ condition/ situation.
Hello to a fellow Staten Islander. My Staten Island Chiropractic office has been in the same place for over 25+ years, and I am a rare breed--- a native Staten Islander.
Yes, I do the kinesio taping you saw on television. I took my certification class a few years ago. I use kinesio taping in the office as an adjunct to my treatment. I use the kinesio taping on the field to prevent injury, aid in recovery from injury, reduce swelling, edema, pain.
Kinesio taping was invented by a Doctor of Chiropractic in the 1970's. Dr. Kenzo Kase wanted to be able to continue to treat his patients after they walked out of the office. Dr. Kase knew that medical doctors could treat their patients 'long distance', and out of their offices through drugs. You could visit an MD, get 30 pills, and the MD would say- take one per day, and I'll see you in 30 days.
Dr. Kase, DC wanted his patients, chiropractic patients - to have a 'long distance' or take home treatment as well.
Doctors of Chiropractic have treated patients 'long distance' through nutrition and exercise instruction,,, but patient compliance is always a problem; some patients do it, some do not (and MDs have the same problem with compliance-- some medical patients DO take their medicines as instructed, some do NOT).
Dr. Kase, DC; the invention of the Kinesio Tape method can improve patient compliance. Patients do not really have to do anything.
The patient can come to the chiropractic office, get a treatment (if needed) or not, and get kinesio taped. The kinesio taping can hold up to 3- 4- even 5 days. Of course, depending upon the amount of motion in the area taped, and depending upon the patient washing and scrubbing the area. You can certainly bathe, shower, swim with an application of Kinesio Tape. The tape is tailored to stay on, even when wet, through a few days. Of course,,,, if you SCRUB the area, the tape will not last a day. But, you can be taped and wear the tape for 2, 3, 4 days; and return 2, 3, 4, 5 days later for re-evaluation and re-taping if needed.
I have found that a multi faceted approach of physiotherapy (massage, ultrasound, infrasound, muscle stim, interferential, etc.), chiropractic (whether osseous adjustment, spinal, extremity, soft tissue, low force, activator, SOT, etc), nutritional supplementation, and the Kinesio taping to be very effective in my Staten Island Chiropractic office.
Yes, I have utilized Kinesio Taping for years - and the last couple of years we (Curtis High School Football) have been lucky enough- scratch that- good enough to be in the NYC PSAL Championship game. We are NYC PSAL Football Champs right now,,, and possibly partially due to chiropractic and Kinesio Taping.
Your neck, your back, your knee(s), could all be taped if necessary.
Neck pain, back pain, knee pain, shoulders, wrists, ankles,,, all could respond to appropriate kinesio taping.
Kinesio tape is designed from many aspects: Kinesio Tape, kinesio taping can 'mimic', skin, muscle, ligament, tendon. Kinesio tape can support muscles, joints, tendons. As seen on TV, kinesio tape can give support while allowing motion, flexibility, a free range of movment. Kinesio taping is NOT similar to traditional white athletic strapping tape (preventing motion).
I have informational handouts I utilize in the office that may be helpful to you- one sheet each, quick and easy:

P.R.I.C.E. = P protection. R rest. I ice. C compression. E elevation.
Hurt yourself ?? injury/ trauma/ bruise/ not even sure - - a broken bone ??
You should certainly get to the Doctor or trained health professional to be examined if you think it is bad enough. BUT in the meantime, some simple steps may help. PRICE.
The PRICE protocol will usually help just about any musculoskeletal injury.
P = Protection; protect the area from further injury- stop what you are doing, can you pad or bandage the area ? Tape the area? Do something to protect the area !
R = Rest; rest the area as much as possible, if a part is damaged, give the body time to repair the area
I = Ice; ice is a potent anti-inflammatory; it will slow swelling, help with pain control (ice is analgesic), place ice over cloth over the injured area for 5, 10 minutes, off the injured area for 30 minutes; then back on again
C = Compression; to help prevent swelling compression may be helpful- for example if it is an ankle, wrap the ankle with an ace bandage and ice the area. Many body parts may not be applicable to compression.
E = Elevation; again to fight swelling and pain, raising the injured body part above the heart may be helpful- ie raise an ankle or knee, you lay down, raise the injured part
PRICE may help : Sprains, Strains, musculo-skeletal injury, bruise, contusion
Sometimes a slip, trip, fall, heavy lift, athletic injury, or a motor vehicle accident can cause a bump or bruise, sprain or strain. Sometimes also involved with the injury is a vertebral subluxation (or other joint subluxation) (subluxation is a mechanical problem- of any joint- and requires a mechanical correction). In the spine, a sprain/strain is a misalignment, a 慿ink?in the joint, a stretch of the muscles, tendons and/ or ligaments:- more properly termed a Vertebral Subluxation. Sometimes symptoms can come immediately, sometimes days, weeks or even months later!- Well after the actual trauma !!!
Spinal = Vertebral Subluxation Complex (a.k.a. 憇ubluxation? ; ( subluxation COULD be any joint )
The vertebral subluxation complex is the underlying cause of many healthcare problems.
A subluxation interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system (the master system which controls and coordinates all function within the body) and may cause various other conditions, symptoms and problems.
This is a serious condition identified by its five parts:
Spinal Kinesiopathology:
This is fancy way of saying the bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. It restricts your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.
Neuropathophysiology:
Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nerve system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body.
Myopathology:
Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm. The resulting scar tissue changes muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.
Histopathology:
A rise in temperature from an increase in blood and lymph supplies result in swelling and inflammation. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear, or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.
Pathophysiology:
Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to malfunction.
The Vertebral Subluxation Complex describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal movement patterns and position.
Automobile accidents, improper lifting, improper posture, alcohol, emotional stress, chemical imbalances, and long periods of sitting can cause the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Vertebral Subluxation cannot be corrected through chemicals (medicine), stretching, yoga, vitamins or physical therapy alone. Subluxation- a neuro/skeletal/muscular- mechanical- problem requires a mechanical correction- - - a manipulation, best performed with the chiropractic adjustment. For good health- Treat the Cause, not just the Symptoms. Sprain/ strain/ bump/ bruise?= may result in subluxation of the nearby joint. CORRECT the subluxation !!!!

What Does Kinesio Taping Do?
Kinesio Taping gives support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. It is also used for Preventive Maintenance, Edema, and Pain Management
Kinesio Taping was invented by a Doctor of Chiropractic, and is utilized- especially by SPORTS Chiropractors throughout the world. Kinesio Taping helps the body heal naturally, can be used preventatively, as treatment, in rehab, during competition, or as a 憈ake home?treatment applied by the Chiropractor (medical doctors give drugs, chiropractic doctors give tape) .
Kinesio Taping is a technique based on the body's own natural healing process. This Kinesio Taping exhibits its efficacy through the activation of neurological and circulatory systems. This method basically stems from the science of Kinesiology, hence the name "Kinesio". Muscles are not only attributed to the movements of the body but also control the circulation of venous and lymph flows, body temperature, etc. Therefore, the failure of the muscles to function properly induces various kinds of symptoms.
Consequently, so much attention was given to the importance of muscle function that the idea of treating the muscles in order to activate the body's own healing process came about. Using an elastic tape, it was discovered that muscles and other tissues could be helped by outside assistance. Employment of Kinesio Taping creates a totally new approach to treating nerves, muscles, and organs. The first application of Kinesio Taping was for a patient with articular disorders.
For the first 10 years, chiropractors, acupuncturists and other medical practitioners were the main users of Kinesio Taping. Soon thereafter, Kinesio Taping was used by the Japanese Olympic volleyball players and word quickly spread to other athletes. Today, Kinesio Taping is accepted by medical practitioners and athletes in Japan, United States, Europe, South America and other Asian countries.
The Kinesio Taping Method is applied over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, relax overused tired muscles, and to support muscles in movement on a 24hr/day basis. It is non-restrictive type of taping which allows for full range of motion.
In contrast, traditional sports' taping is wrapped around a joint strictly for stabilization and support during a sporting event obstructing the flow of bodily fluids... an UNDESIRABLE side-effect.
Kinesio Tape is used for anything from headaches to foot problems and everything in between. Examples include: muscular facilitation or inhibition in pediatric patients, carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back strain/pain (subluxations, herniated disc), knee conditions, shoulder conditions, hamstring, groin injury, rotator cuff injury, whiplash, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, patella tracking, pre and post surgical edema, ankle sprains, athletic preventative injury method, and as a support method.

QUESTION: Dear Dr. Dolan,
Wow! That is a lot of good information! But since I have neck and back muscle spasm and I have never been to the chiropractor, I just want to make sure, would kinesio taping be good for all areas at once, or should I start with the knees, and does chiropractic hurt ??
thanks again

Hello Pat,
I thought I answered this question earlier,,,, oh well, computers!(?)!
You have never been to the Chiropractor ! ?
Chiropractic ain't just for necks and backs!
Chiropractic is safe, effective, and cost effective. The Doctor of Chiropractic treats the body through the spine and nervous system.
As I stated earlier, visit your local Doctor of Chiropractic, in this case- your local Staten Island Chiropractor could be me!
Your neck and back problems could actually stem from altered gait with the knee pain. A chiropractic evaluation will take in your gait and ambulation patterns. Knee treatment, back and neck treatment could all be performed during the same visit(s). Adjustment, physiotherapy, kinesio taping, all of these procedures (if appropriate based upon evaluation) could be performed concurrently.
Chiropractic is safe and effective, Doctors of Chiropractic pay much lower malpractice insurance then medical doctors. Some surprising medical statistics:

Death by Medicine
By Gary Null, PhD; Carolyn Dean MD, ND; Martin Feldman, MD; Debora Rasio, MD; and Dorothy Smith, PhD
Natural medicine is under siege, as pharmaceutical company lobbyists urge lawmakers to deprive Americans of the benefits of dietary supplements. Drug-company front groups have launched slanderous media campaigns to discredit the value of healthy lifestyles. The FDA continues to interfere with those who offer natural products that compete with prescription drugs.
These attacks against natural medicine obscure a lethal problem that until now was buried in thousands of pages of scientific text. In response to these baseless challenges to natural medicine, the Nutrition Institute of America commissioned an independent review of the quality of 揼overnment-approved?medicine. The startling findings from this meticulous study indicate that conventional medicine is 搕he leading cause of death?in the United States .
The Nutrition Institute of America is a nonprofit organization that has sponsored independent research for the past 30 years. To support its bold claim that conventional medicine is America 's number-one killer, the Nutritional Institute of America mandated that every 揷ount?in this 搃ndictment?of US medicine be validated by published, peer-reviewed scientific studies.
What you are about to read is a stunning compilation of facts that documents that those who seek to abolish consumer access to natural therapies are misleading the public. Over 700,000 Americans die each year at the hands of government-sanctioned medicine, while the FDA and other government agencies pretend to protect the public by harassing those who offer safe alternatives.
A definitive review of medical peer-reviewed journals and government health statistics shows that American medicine frequently causes more harm than good.
Each year approximately 2.2 million US hospital patients experience adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to prescribed medications. In 1995, Dr. Richard Besser of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated the number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually for viral infections to be 20 million; in 2003, Dr. Besser spoke in terms of tens of millions of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually. Approximately 7.5 million unnecessary medical and surgical procedures are performed annually in the US, while approximately 8.9 million Americans are hospitalized unnecessarily.
As shown in the above table, the estimated total number of iatrogenic deaths梩hat is, deaths induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures?in the US annually is 783,936. It is evident that the American medical system is itself the leading cause of death and injury in the US . By comparison, approximately 699,697 Americans died of heart in 2001, while 553,251 died of cancer.

A handout from my Staten Island Chiropractic office:
Degenerative Disk Disease ( DDD, DJD, OA )
Degenerative Disc, Degenerative Joint Disease, progressive OsteoArthritic Degeneration
Degenerative Disc Disease (old term = DJD) is actually a quite common condition. However, the course of the condition is highly variable. Some patients with DJD literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar X-ray/ MRI findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights. Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months. Although the course is highly variable, there are certain steps that are always helpful to follow: Ice the area when painful- 10/ 15minutes on, 30/ 45 minutes off; avoid certain postures and movements; bend the knees when coughing or sneezing; bend the knees when lifting anything; do not extend legs straight out when sitting, laying down, lifting, or driving. Avoiding certain movements and postures will prevent aggravation of the condition. Practicing good postures and movement patterns will help the condition heal and be less painful. Degenerative disk disease, degenerative joint disease, deteriorating discs (disk) is/ are often caused by, or often concurrent with the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
