Neck pain after chiropractic manipulation

Question
Hi, My husband has recently visited chiropractor for his sciatica, lower back pain that he has had for a few years. For some reason, and without any warning, the chiropractor perfomred neck manipulation, and since then my husband has had persostent pain in his neck. In the first week after the treatment, he was nauseous and had persistent headache. For the past 4 weeks, the nausea subsided, however, the neck pain has been pretty intense, with tingling in his arms, and occasional headaches. I would like to know if its common after neck manipulation, how much time should he expect before it heals, and what can he do to make sure it heals faster and doesn't turn into a chronic condition? Thank you for all you help. It hurts to see him in so much pain.

Answer
Emma,

No, this is not a normal response to manipulation, particularly if a regional exam of the head and neck was not performed prior to the manipulation.

I recommend your husband see a neurologist or his family physician for evaluation ASAP.
