Answerstaten island spinal decompression, low back pain, herniated disc, back pain, pain medication, 'sacrificed' $5000, health insurance, insurance coverage
Hello Ashraf,
Sorry to hear of your BAD bout with back pain in the past, and the occasional bout of back pain now.
I will cut to the chase:
Is there ANY health insurance that covers DRX9000 treatment?
NO insurance covers any specific manufacturer of any equipment. The DRX9000 is a type of equipment that provides non-invasive spinal decompression. "Noninvasive spinal decompression" (NSD)is a procedure often utilized in chiropractic offices. NSD is provided by MANY chiropractors on MANY different types of equipment.
Is there any health insurance that covers NSD?
NSD is often termed 'investigational' or 'experimental' by the INSURANCE COMPANIES that collect money and do not want to pay out money. The VAST majority of insurance companies do NOT cover noninvasive spinal decompression. IF, if, IF you were to find an insurance company that DOES cover the procedure; that would be rare indeed. IF, if, IF you were to find insurance that covered the procedure,,,,, the insurance company would probably cover at a severely reduced rate ,,,, so you would probably NOT find a Doctor to take that kind of insurance.
So, back to the chase:
Is there ANY health insurance that covers noninvasive spinal decompression procedures (of which DRX9000 is one of many machines) ?
Probably NOT.
I would like to address other issues raised in your question.
The nonsurgical decompression worked well for you!, so you did not have to take pain medications (with their own contraindications, complications, problems - see below), so you did not need invasive surgical procedures (with ALL of the attendant risk of surgery, prolonged recovery and rehabilitation) and lengthy recovery.
IF, if, IF you had gone the surgical route,,,, there are insurance questions here also,,,, there are co-payments and deductibles to be met, the hospital may be covered in whole, in part, or not at all; the surgeon may be covered in whole, part, or not at all, the anesthesiologist probably would NOT be covered, maybe part: ALL of these have copayments and deductibles. Then there is the rehabilitation following the surgery--- again copayments and deductibles apply and coverage may be whole (with copays and deducts), part or none. IF you had the surgery, the cost TO YOU could have easily been $4000- $5000- $6000.
ANY health procedure in America includes the 'sacrifice' of the patient's individual responsibility for payment. Our EXISTING national healthcare plans ( Medicare and Medicaid ) have lists and lists of procedures NOT covered (that the patient pays for entirely).
ANY health insurance will include procedures covered, not covered, doctors covered- not covered, copayments and deductibles.
So, when you say you 'sacrificed' $5000 and SUCCESSFULLY treated your herniated disc and back pain,,,, I do not know what other path you could have taken.

NOTICE ON PAIN RELIEVERS:
Label changes ORDERED by FDA;
the FDA announced proposed label changes for OTC over-the-counter pain relievers to include the potential for stomach bleeding and liver damage (FDA news 206- 207; 12-9-06) ;
The American Heart Association issued a scientific statement recommending medical doctors change the way they prescribe OTC pain relievers from a first choice to an alternate of recommending non-pharmacologic treatment (AHA statement 2-26-07).
Pain can often be the result of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Vertebral Subluxation ( 慥SC?, 憇ubluxation? )
Vertebral Subluxation is actually a quite common condition. Doctors of Chiropractic look for pathological conditions which may require referral to other specialties, and also look for 慡ubluxation? Other disciplines look for pathology, but overlook the importance of alignment and movement in the spine which affects our nervous system (the master control system- ALL health disciplines learn this). Only a Doctor of Chiropractic will evaluate and treat for VSC. The course of VSC is highly variable. Some patients with VSC literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar test findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights. Some patients immediately develop symptoms related to the VSC, some patients take years to develop symptoms. Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months. Some people recover in days, some take months or years, depending upon severity of the condition.
Vertebral Subluxation Complex (a.k.a. 憇ubluxation?
The vertebral subluxation complex is the underlying cause of many healthcare problems.
A subluxation interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system (the master system which controls and coordinates all function within the body) and may cause various other conditions, symptoms and problems.
Subluxation is a serious condition identified by its five parts:
Spinal Kinesiopathology: This is fancy way of saying the bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. It restricts your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.
Neuropathophysiology: Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nerve system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body.
Myopathology: Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm. The resulting scar tissue changes muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.
Histopathology: A rise in temperature from an increase in blood and lymph supplies result in swelling and inflammation. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear, or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.
Pathophysiology: The VSC contributes to OsteoArthritic degeneration. Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to malfunction.
The Vertebral Subluxation Complex describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal movement patterns and position. When subluxated, joints are in a stressed, vulnerable, compromised condition. Subluxation may cause Arthritis, Disk Herniation, or aggravate such conditions.
Vertebral Subluxation cannot be corrected through chemicals (medicine), stretching, yoga, vitamins or physical therapy alone. Subluxation- a neuro/skeletal/muscular- mechanical- problem requires a mechanical correction- - - a manipulation, best performed with the chiropractic adjustment. +++++++++++++++++
Why does your back hurt you more at home than when you are working?
Believe it or not--- motion is generally good for us, our joints, our muscles. Movement required when we are out of the house and working may be better then relaxing at home! Perhaps your truck has good ergonomic seats. Perhaps your mattress and chairs at home are too soft, too low, put you in poor posture.
Another informational handout I use in my Staten Island Chiropractic office on Herniated disc, low back pain may also be of interest to you:
+++++ Disk Herniation
Herniated disk is actually a quite common condition. However, the course of the condition is highly variable. Some patients with a herniated disk literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar MRI findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights. Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months.
Although the course is highly variable, there are certain steps that are always helpful to follow: Ice the area when painful- 10/ 15minutes on, 30/ 45 minutes off; avoid certain postures and movements; bend the knees when coughing or sneezing; bend the knees when lifting anything; do not extend legs straight out when sitting, laying down, lifting, or driving. Avoiding certain movements and postures will prevent aggravation of the condition. Practicing good postures and movement patterns will help the condition heal and be less painful.
Disk Herniation is often caused by, or often concurrent with the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

You have had a serious back problem; a herniated disc. Besides spinal maintenance care througth noninvasive (nonsurgical) spinal decompression for maintenance, a regimen of traditional chiropractic should be helpful. Supplementation with joint support vitamins and nutrition would be helpful (glucosamine, chondroitin, omega 3 efa's).
Preventive spinal maintenance is important for your condition, again- this Staten Island Chiropractor has information I hand out in the office:
+++++++ What ? ! , I have to brush my teeth!?,,, after EVERY meal ! ? ,,, For the REST of my life ! ? ! ... I don抰 want to. period. I won抰. To heck with it ! If I get a hole (cavity), THEN I抣l take care of it. Maybe I won抰 get any cavities anyway?.
It took the American Dental Association YEARS to educate people that they should brush frequently to avoid dental disease. It has taken YEARS to educate patients that visits to the Dentist for hygiene, cleanings, flossing, coatings, etc. are necessary to PREVENT dental problems. Some people still do not floss after every meal, some do not even brush often enough (yyyuuukkkk), so some people still have severe dental problems despite all the knowledge about PREVENTION and dental health maintenance that is out there. Can you believe it ?? !!
Some people have the same problem with PREVENTATIVE Spinal Health
that used to exist with preventative dental health. Some people come to the Doctor of Chiropractic and say, ?..do not adjust me, just give me therapy...? some people say,
?..What ? ! , I have to practice SPINAL HYGIENE !?!, (practice proper postures, proper movement patterns, and see the Chiropractor periodically !?!), Naahh, ... I don抰
want to. period. I won抰. To heck with it! When I get PAIN, then I抣l take care of it.
( pain is often the LAST symptom to appear- whether a cavity or a heart attack ! )

Chiropractic corrects the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Only a Doctor of Chiropractic will check you for Vertebral Subluxation.
You cannot be 慼ealthy?if you have a Subluxation. You MAY feel it, with a pain, stiffness, or a 慿ink?in your neck/ back. You may NOT even feel it-
just as people often do not feel the cavity growing in their tooth,,,, until it hits the nerve; or you may not feel it at all, like people do not feel high blood pressure or diabetes until AFTER damage has been done!! PREVENTION- Visit the Doctor of Chiropractic REGULARLY,,, just like your dentist! (practice spinal hygiene as you do dental hygiene -PREVENTION!-

In my office I also utilize noninvasive (nonsurgical) spinal decompression protocols. I utilize one of the newest tables (equipment) available- a Chattanooga table. Spinal Decompression can be wonderfully successful for the appropriate patient- as it was for you. Think about the shape you were in,,,, think about the alternatives (surgery, long rehab) ,,,, think about maintaining your progress with prevention. Prevention may or may NOT mean decompression-- perhaps traditional Chiropractic could suffice (and be less expensive) for you.
I hope this helps. If you require further information, do not hesitate to re-contact me at AllExperts.com: http://allexperts.com/ep/965-100794/Chiropractors/Victor-Dolan-DC-DACBSP.htm Thanks for the question.
