Question
my husband has been complaining of a pain in his back. he's always called it a pinched nerve. however he also has a co-existing pain on the inner part of his arms (just below the armpits) that he feels is originating from the same root problem. he gets terrible tingling and numbness in his arms and hands. he seems to find relief if i massage certain areas on his back and arms. so i did some research online and have seemingly targeted the first theocratic nerve in his back, and the medial or ulnar nerve in his arm. am i on the right track here? if so is there anything that can be done.????

thank you so much!

Answer
Pinched nerve, pain in the back, pain in the neck, tingling, numbness, massage, median nerve, ulnar nerve, theocratic nerve = thoracic nerve? ,

Hello Amy,

Sorry to hear of your husband's pain.  Sorry to hear of a (perhaps) pinched nerve.

You talk about 'back pain', what is the location of this back pain, way up high in the back- i.e.: just below the neck, at the top of the midback?, or down low- near the waist, the beltline, the low back?
Is this back pain- up in the neck, or the base of the neck?

Nerves originate in the spinal cord, exit the spine, and run fairly predictable courses to their destination.  The middle, lower neck and the upper (top) back contribute to nerves that run out and down- into the shoulders, shoulder blades, chest, arms, even to the fingertips.

Perhaps your husband does have a 'pinched nerve' in the neck (lower neck) and/ or the upper back (upper thoracic spine).  Why does he refer to this complaint as a 'pinched nerve'- has a health professional seen him, given an examination, and made a diagnosis?
From your description- it could be a 'pinched nerve'.  From your description it could involve the lower cervical or upper thoracic nerve roots that supply the shoulder, shoulder blade, chest, arms.

If your husband can move his neck and reproduce (duplicate) the pain, then it definitely is a pinched nerve.  If neck movement does not impact the complaint, perhaps it is a pinched nerve in the shoulder itself.

Regardless, this is not something that can be 'massaged away', 'aspirin-ed away', or 'advil-ed away'.  Have a health Professional perform an examination upon your husband.  Get a proper diagnosis.  Proper evaluation may include Xray, MRI, perhaps EMG/ncv.

I would recommend a Doctor of Chiropractic in this case. My Staten Island Chiropractic office handles cases like this every day.  "Pinched nerves", neck pain, back pain, sciatica, pain radiating from the spine, all of these things respond well to safe, conservative, noninvasive chiropractic care.

I utilize informational handouts in my Staten Island Chiropractic office - perhaps these will be of help to you:

Pain  can  often  be  the  result  of  the  Vertebral  Subluxation  Complex.

Vertebral  Subluxation           (  慥SC?,    憇ubluxation?  )

Vertebral Subluxation  is  actually  a  quite  common  condition.   Doctors of Chiropractic look for pathological conditions which may require referral to other specialties,   and also look for 慡ubluxation? Other disciplines look for pathology, but overlook the importance of alignment and movement in the spine which affects our nervous system  (the master control system- ALL health disciplines learn this).

Only a Doctor of Chiropractic will evaluate and treat for VSC.

The course of VSC is highly variable.   Some patients with VSC literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar test findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights.    Some patients immediately develop symptoms related to the VSC,  some patients take years to develop symptoms.  Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months.  Some people recover in days, some take months or years, depending upon severity of the condition.

         Vertebral   Subluxation   Complex    (a.k.a.  憇ubluxation?
The vertebral subluxation complex is the underlying cause of many healthcare problems.
A subluxation interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system (the master system which controls and coordinates all function within the body) and may cause various other conditions, symptoms and problems.

Subluxation  is  a  serious  condition  identified  by  its  five  parts:
Spinal Kinesiopathology:        This is fancy way of saying the bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. It restricts your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.

Neuropathophysiology:         Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nerve system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body.

Myopathology:           Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm. The resulting scar tissue changes muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.

Histopathology:       A rise in temperature from an increase in blood and lymph supplies result in swelling and inflammation. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear, or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.

Pathophysiology:     The VSC contributes to OsteoArthritic degeneration.  Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to malfunction.

The Vertebral Subluxation Complex describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal movement patterns and position.  When subluxated, joints are in a stressed, vulnerable, compromised condition.  Subluxation may cause Arthritis, Disk Herniation, or aggravate such conditions.
Vertebral  Subluxation   cannot   be corrected through chemicals (medicine), stretching,  yoga,  vitamins  or  physical  therapy  alone.       Subluxation- a neuro/skeletal/muscular-    mechanical-    problem  requires  a    mechanical correction-  -  -    a manipulation,     best performed with the chiropractic adjustment.

揚inched  Nerve?  ( Also Known As-  neuritis, neuralgia, brachial-neuritis )

Sometimes  we  can  wake  up  with  a  憄inched nerve?  or  a  muscle spasm.... sometimes a slip, trip, fall, heavy lift, or even a motor vehicle accident can cause a 憄inched nerve?

Nerves control and co-ordinate EVERY activity in the body.  When you have pain, perhaps other functions of your body are affected as well- not just the pain nerve cells!

PAIN is important.  Pain is your body saying: something is wrong here.

Very often -  the true    c a u s e   of  the pinched nerve, pain or numbness  in the:    neck and/ or  shoulder  and/ or  arm  and/ or  hand;   pain in the back and/ or   buttock/ hip/ leg/ knee/ foot -  is a misalignment,  a  慿ink?in the neck- more properly termed a Vertebral Subluxation.

Automobile accidents, improper lifting, improper posture, alcohol, emotional stress, chemical imbalances, and long periods of sitting can cause the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

揝tiff   Neck?  ( Also Known As-  wryneck, torticollis, neck muscle spasm )
-can be caused by big bad things: cancers, tumors, fractures, even heart attacks- only history/ examination/ evaluation by an appropriate health professional can differentiate these problems/ conditions.   USUALLY  these  complaints  are  neuro-musculo-skeletal.   For  example: sometimes  we  can  wake  up  with  a  憇tiff  neck?  or  a  muscle spasm.... sometimes a slip, trip, fall, heavy lift, or even a motor vehicle accident can cause a 憇tiff neck?   Sometimes  we  just  slept  wrong !   Often-  the true    c a u s e   of  the neck stiffness and pain;  the underlying  c a u s e    of the complaint  - is a misalignment,  a 慿ink? in  the  neck -  more  properly  termed  a   Vertebral  Subluxation.  Treat the   c a u s e,  not just  the  symptoms - for  true  improvement.
