QuestionI need help! I am young and active and my back pain is ruining my life! Growing up I noticed that my back would feel uncomfortable in school, but never hurt too bad. In college, the feeling of discomfort grew, and during certain periods, I couldn't sit still in my chair all day during classes. Though I took gymnastics and dance classes when young, I could never acheive the flexibility that the other kids had, couldn't ever touch my toes or do a back bend without help. I continued dancing throughout college and after, and doing pilates, yoga, and playing sports. One day at age 25 I had a deep tissue massage, and two days later my back gave out. I saw a chiropractor and he said some of my large muscles relaxed and didn't hold up my back anymore, or something like that. We had regular sessions, and his work did help, but only temporarily. After that initial deep tissue massage, my back would "go out" regularly. One day while sitting watching tv the pain came on, got worse and worse until I couldn't move. Even lying in bed hurt. Someone carried me into the chiropractor and he did some work and the next day I could move again. Since then it continues to interrupt my life. When I have the pain, I can't go to work or continue my normal lifestyle. I've been to doctors and had x-rays and bloodwork (which all come out negative). The doctors say there is nothing wrong (which makes me so angry!) I'm writing to you now because it's happened again and I can't move. The pain is centered on my lower right side by and around my tailbone. My back is also stiff after I've been sitting or laying for long periods of time. It feels like someone stuck a doorjamb next to my tailbone, and no position makes it better. Muscle relaxers and painkillers don't help (they help with the stiffness a little though). I'm desperate to live my life normally, and this chronic pain makes me depressed and feel worthless. Can you help? I should also mention that I've had carpal tunnel and nerve problems (according to my chiropractor and physical therapist) down my right side starting from my neck and into my arms. I think one of my legs is longer (sits lower) than the other one. Any help is appreciated!!! Thank you!
AnswerI would suggest looking into two area: A spasm of the Psoas/Iliacus muscles, causing Psoas syndrome. A misalignment of the coccyx. Both of these can cause the symptoms you describe, and you should not have to live with the pain. Your chiropractor should be able to asses it for you, but, if he or she has difficulty, let me know.
Good Luck
