QuestionHello, about a month ago I was getting up from a seated position, pushing up with both arms, when I noticed a small pop in my left elbow. I did not think much of it at the time since it did not hurt. Ever since then I have this clicking noise that is always heard when I rotate my left forearm while having my elbow bent anywhere from 45 to 90 degrees.
Any idea what it could be? Again no pain associated with it, just annoyance and fear that there is damage. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Also I am concerned about exercising with it. I am 36 male. Thank you.
AnswerDave,
Joints will make noise if there is adhesion or scar tissue in the joint, if there is anatomic disruption such as "loose bodies" or chips in the cartilage, if there is swelling deep in the joint, or if there simply is joint malfunction. Since you have no pain, the odds of inflammation or tissue disruption is slim to none. Most likely you strained the joint in a subtle manner and caused it to malfunction. If the elbow joint fails to track properly, with the bones sliding through their grooves, you will get joint noise without pain. This can be tested, as often a malfunctioning elbow will cause reflex weakness to the Triceps. So have someone test the strength of the left triceps and compare it to the right. The best way is for you to lay down and a tester stands or kneels next to you. You place your elbow on their thigh, elbow bend to 90 degrees, and make a fist. The tester presses on the back of your wrist, below the wrist joint, and your job is to hold still and don't let the elbow bend. Then test it in the same position with the wrist in flexion and again with the wrist in extension. If your triceps gives out with wrist in flexon or extension, it's a sign that the elbow is in a state of dysfunction. A chiropractor with good skills addressing extremity joints can help. The last possibility is that you disrupted with tearing one of the fascial slings that envelope the the joint. Try massaging all around the elbow, especially in places that seem to pop or snap. If all fails, see a chiropractor and get the elbow checked out.
'Hope this helps.
