QuestionHi. I have had a long running issue that I would like some advice about. I have had numbness down my right leg since August 2007. I have been seeing a chiropractor for this problem since February 2008. One area that seems to be a problem is my pelvis, which needs to be constantly adjusted to stay "in alignment". Over the past few months (probably about 6 months) I will go through periods of time where I am relatively symptom free. All of a sudden, I will start feeling the numbness again, and I will feel pain in my hip area and in my butt. Generally, when this happens, I go to my chiropractor and he adjusts me and it goes away. As an example, I was feeling ok on Monday night, by Tuesday morning I was in alot of pain walking. When I saw my chiropractor, he said my sacrum was completely twisted and both of my feet were pointing to the right. This incident was brought on by me trying some swing dancing moves that require twisting. In other cases, my pelvis will have tilted upwards or downwards, creating a similar constellation of symptoms. I have two questions:
Is there something else I need to be doing to keep my sacrum from moving like this? I have been doing some pelvic stabilization excercises, and I attempt to do nothing that will cause this problem (though that is very difficult).
I am thinking about seeking another chiropractors advice on this ... should I be looking for a specific specialty of chiropractor? Thanks so much for any advice on a weird problem
AnswerTension in the supporting muscles and ligaments of the pelvis as a whole can cause recurrence of your symptoms. Piriformis stretching, Psoas stretching and strengthening, etc., will go a long way toward helping to decrease the recurrence. Soft tissue work, especially of the ligaments of the pelvis/sacrum may also work wonders for you.
