Question
I am a 53 yr. old Nanny who threw a football (for 20 min.)did not hear popping sound or experience pain. Next day felt a little sore, then slowly over the next few weeks, frozen shoulder! 4 yrs. prior my face and body (right side, same side as frozen shoulderx3s46) got slammed hard into a refrigerator. We are pretty sure these two are connected, so says my upper cervical D.C.. It has been 7 months since the football incident, I have been through three months of active release tech (D.C.)no change, 3 weeks Graston tech. (D.C.) no change. upper cervical treatment by world reknowned D.C. Now I have had two trigger pt. therapy treatments with very little improvement. He is asking me to wear a shoulder immobilizer sling. I'm confused, wouldn't that "freeze up" a shoulder even more? I have experienced SO much pain, and just want to throw my hands in the air, but that would hurt alot :) all kidding aside, any suggestions or should I give this trigger pt. a chance. Thank you, Kathy

Staten Island Manipulation Under Anesthesia, Staten Island Frozen Shoulder,  Staten Island Adhesive Capsulitis, M.U.A.

Hello Kathy,

I am sorry to hear of your Frozen Shoulder.

I assume you have been given this Diagnosis by your DC or MD.

Frozen Shoulder (aka GlenoHumeral Adhesive Capsulitis) is actually quite common.  Physical Therapy modalities such as ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, manipulation, massage, progressive exercise (all usually available at your local Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) or Physical Therapy (PT) office), often effectively treat this malady.

A.R.T.- active release and/ or Graston along with the above PT modalities should have handled your problem.  'Frozen shoulder' is also often related to subluxation of C5- C6 segments.  You are not in the wrong place(s)- usually your complaints are effectively handled by the treatments you mention.  Sometimes, even when we are in the right place for the right treatment, we have a tougher case, a recalcitrant case.

After having tried all of the above, I would ask my treating Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) for an evaluation as to a Chiropractic Manipulation Under Anesthesia of the Shoulder and/ or Cervical spine.

Chiropractic MUA is safe and effective.  If you cannot find a DC in the area to perform the C-spine/ shoulder complex; perhaps an Orthopedic MD would perform the MUA upon your shoulder.]

"....He is asking me to wear a shoulder immobilizer sling. I'm confused, wouldn't that "freeze up" a shoulder even more?....".
I agree.  With a diagnosis of frozen shoulder,,,,,,, I do not think I would want to further LIMIT motion.

"....should I give this trigger pt. a chance....".  Sure, will not hurt, BUT if it does not help,,, I would progress to evaluation for an MUA.
