Question
Hi Dr. John,
I'm a 5'6", 135 lbs., 44 yr old, very physically fit, mother of two adult children. I discovered I have lumbar scoliosis at the age of 22 during a new employment physical. I've never had any back pain or related problems until Nov. 2009. Recently I've been experiencing persistent "dull" mid to lower back aches that sometimes radiate to my hips and into my buttocks. I also periodically experience a sharp stabbing pain in the rectum. It only lasts for a few seconds and is usually in conjunction with a bowel movement during menstruation. I should mention that I've work out daily over the past year: cardio, step-aerobics, kick boxing, zumba, weight training. Should I be concerned about disc degeneration as a result of my work-outs? The back pain doesn't keep me from doing anything (yet) but I'm AWARE of it it won't seem to go away with heat, massage, ibuprofen, etc. I am also curious if there is a correlation between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Lumbar Scoliosis. I've been dealing with early morning diarrhea, flatulence, bloating and fatty stools for many years and have always assumed it was I.B.S. At times the urgency to have a bowel movement is very intense (a.m.) and I can feel it in the same areas as the back-aches. Certain foods, like dairy products, seem to make matters worse so I avoid them. Its not debilitating in any way but I wonder if chiropractics may be the road to take. I've been gluten free since the New year to see if it makes any difference. Thanks for your help and Happy New Year!

Answer
Pierrette,

Considering your question I think you are definitely a candidate for a chiropractic work up and more than likely Chiropractic treatment. I would suggest that you enter the Chiropractors office with realistic expectations. You have had the scoliosis for over 18-20 years and it may be impossible to straighten the scoliosis out. I think it is more realistic to seek help to improve your lifestyle. Chiropractic may help you with your back pain, irritable bowel ( nutritionally as well as structurally)and back pain when exercising.

I commend you on your dietary lifestyle changes. Good luck with your health journey..you are either on a health journey or a sickness journey there is no standing still. It is apparent you are on the way to health, vim and vigor.

Yours in Health,
