QuestionHello,
I am 17 years old. For about 5 years now I have had pains at the base of my skull connecting to the right neck region. They give me a migrane about once a week and a headache maybe two times a week. My mother does not have a lot of money, and I don't know whether I should go to a Chiropractor or a Physician. Could it just be a knot or could it be as bad as a tumor? Its been there a long time and I'm getting concerned. Sorry about the spelling.
Thank you, Angela
AnswerAngela,
I do believe that this is something that should be looked into. I really can't answer your question directly without examining your head, neck and shoulders.
What you are describing could be a pinched nerve. You could start with a chiropractor for a physical examination. Chiropractors are trained to make differential diagnosis and a competent chiropractor would discuss your options before starting any treatment.More importantly he would refer you to a medical Physician if he suspected a tumor.
Please be aware a tumor is usually the worst case scenario and will need to be ruled out. This may require x-rays and/or MRI studies. These can be expensive for someone who does not have health insurance. Check into what your state offers you as a 17 year old you may be able to get these tests done free of charge. Time is of the essence so please do not hesitate. You should visit a health care practitioner of your choice either Medical or Chiropractic.
I hope this sheds some light on your decision to seek care.
Sincerely,
Dr John Quackenbush
