Hi,

I have been operated for L4-L5 in 2003. no relief. have sciatica in both the legs. also me recent MRI shows that I have slip disc at L1-L2 and D-11. life is hell...need urgent help...God bless you for your Generosity.

Answer
slip disc, slip disk, slipped disc, staten island slipped disc, herniated disc, herniated disk, HNP, herniated nucleus pulposis, pinched nerve, sciatica, staten island sciatica, low back surgery, lumbar surgery, low back pain, staten island low back pain, staten island chiropractor,

Hello Girish Trivedi,

I  am  sorry  to  hear  of  your  pain.   I  am  sorry  to  hear  of  such  a  longstanding  condition.   I  do  wish  you  luck  in  returning  to  Good Health, Naturally!

You state:  ".....I have been operated for L4-L5 in 2003.....",  and you have never had a relief from pain.  Have you spoken with the surgeon?  Did your Doctor of Chiropractic agree that the surgery was necessary- before the procedure?,  How long did you try conservative, non-invasive care for your complaint, PRIOR to resorting to surgery.  All surgery, by definition, is a major invasion into our bodies.  Most 'Back Doctors'- whether the Doctor of Chiropractic, Physical Therapist, Osteopath, Orthopedic Medical Doctor will recommend an EXTENSIVE trial of non-invasive, conservative care for low back pain, sciatica, lumbago, lumbalgia, a herniated disk, a slipped disc, or a lumbar pinched nerve.
Once you have had surgery- you have ALTERED the structure, altered the 'lay of the land', altered the geography of the terrain, altered the way the joints of the spine work.  Surgery is a BIG decision and a BIG step.
Since I do not have further information on your case, I assume you went through extensive conservative care before proceeding through an invasive surgical procedure.   Once you decided upon the surgery, I am sure the surgeon gave you lots of information about the procedure.
When things are bad enough- the pain is terrible, you cannot control your bowel or bladder, muscle control of the legs is lost; surgery is a must.   When you are that bad off- you HAVE to have surgery, and any improvement at all is a welcome improvement.
When things are 'borderline', when there is pain, but it is 'bearable', when there is dysfunction, but most activities can be completed,,, that is when the decision to have surgery is very hard.
Failed back surgeries are so common that there is a diagnostic entity- FBS, failed back surgery as a diagnosis.  Some back surgeries do restore the patient to almost full activity. Most back surgeries do require an alteration in the ADLs (activities of daily living) for the patient.  Most back surgeries do not return the patient to FULL or better activity.  When a patient returns to their former level of activity, they often re-aggravate the condition and can often return to their painful condition.
The changes made lower- to your L4- L5 disc(s) put more stress upon the discs/ structures above.  Often with surgery- either the 'repaired' area fails, or the altered biomechanics place increased stress upon the joints above- causing those joints to fail.
Even with that surgical intervention, even with that invasive change to your body structure- you should certainly see your local Doctor of Chiropractic,  often called 'the spine specialist' by the public.

".....I have been operated for L4-L5 in 2003. no relief.....", - no relief, first- I am sure the surgeon told you there is no guarantee that the surgery would absolutely 100% make you better.  Second- you should have had several discussions with the surgeon about the procedure performed, and what could / can be done now.
With or without your surgeon's cooperation- you have to get operative reports, pre & post Xrays/ MRIs, any and all the info you can gather to bring to your next stop- whether the Doctor of Chiropractic, the Licensed Acupuncturist, the Physical Therapist, another surgeon, an Osteopath or whoever.  I  do  recommend  visiting  your  local  family Doctor of Chiropractic.

".....I have been operated for L4-L5 in 2003. no relief. have sciatica in both the legs.....", Sciatica in BOTH legs is a serious sign.   You should see your local DC as soon as possible.  There are many nonsurgical, noninvasive techniques that could be utilized, from spinal decompression to cox flexion distraction, to SOT technique-  see  the chiropractic doctor!
Certainly you have to gather your old records, and will need new imaging- Xrays and MRI or CT scan.

".....also me recent MRI shows that I have slip disc at L1-L2 and D-11......", that MRI makes you a candidate for the techniques I mentioned above- Cox flex/ distract technique, spinal decompression, SOT, perhaps A.R.T., perhaps Graston, perhaps even traditional chiropractic side roll therapy could be helpful.  An in person, hands on, chiropractic physical examination by your local doctor is my best recommendation!

"......also me recent MRI shows that I have slip disc at L1-L2 and D-11. life is hell...need urgent help......."- Back Problems are the #1 reason for disability in the USA, I am sure it is similar in your country!  I understand what you are saying!-  Again, see your local DC  (doctor of chiropractic) or PT (physical therapist) for conservative approaches to your current complaint.  Of course I favor the DC (being a DC myself!!).  Only after conservative therapy fails would I resort to another surgery!

".....God bless you for your Generosity.....", may God Bless you- good luck, I hope God smiles upon you in this complaint.

For your further information, I am going to attach some info I hand out in my Staten Island Chiropractic office to my Low Back Pain Patients, and even to my Staten Island Herniated Disc patients:

PAIN

Pain  is a  憆ed light on the dashboard?

RED  LIGHT  =   Trouble !!

Pain  is  your  body  telling  you  that  something  is  wrong.   Think  you  should  listen??
That RED LIGHT on the dashboard of your car-
-- do you ignore it until the car breaks down,
or do you get it checked and correct the problem?

Pain,
pain in your body-
-- do you ignore it until your body breaks down,
or do you get it checked and correct the problem?

Pain,
do you cover up the pain by taking a painkiller?
Take a painkiller,
mask the pain,
and allow a problem to progress in your body?

Pain  Killing  medication???  =    16,000  deaths   ( probably  under-reported )
DEATH ! ? ! ?    better   watch  out  on  those  medications!!!

                             NOTICE  ON  PAIN  RELIEVERS:

Label changes ORDERED by FDA;  the FDA announced proposed label changes for OTC over-the-counter pain relievers to  include the potential for stomach bleeding and liver damage (FDA news  206- 207;  12-9-06) ;
SIXTEEN THOUSAND DEATHS: "Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effective medications for the treatment of many chronically painful medical conditions. However, it is estimated that 25% of all serious adverse drug reactions involve NSAIDs, with more than 100,000 hospitalizations and 16,000 deaths occurring annually due to NSAID-induced gastrointestinal (GI) events."----- http://hhc.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/13/6/468   Home Health Care Management & Practice, Vol. 13, No. 6, 468-475 (2001)  Motrin, Advil = NSAIDS

The  American Heart Association issued a scientific statement   recommending medical doctors change the way they prescribe OTC pain relievers from a first choice    to an alternate of recommending non-pharmacologic treatment (AHA statement  2-26-07).

NSAID Acceleration of ARTHRITIS; an important side effect of Aspirin and other NSAIDS is that it will inhibit cartilage repair and accelerate cartilage  destruction ( Journal of Rheumatology, 1982; 9: 3- 5 ).   Many times people take NSAIDS  for  the pain of Arthritis,  not realizing these drugs may make the underlying condition worse.   These medications  cover  up  the  pain,  and  cause  the  problem  to   worsen.

Pain  can  often  be  the  result  of  the  Vertebral  Subluxation  Complex.

Vertebral  Subluxation           (  慥SC?,    憇ubluxation?  )
Vertebral Subluxation  is  actually  a  quite  common  condition.   Doctors of Chiropractic look for pathological conditions which may require referral to other specialties,   and also look for 慡ubluxation? Other disciplines look for pathology, but overlook the importance of alignment and movement in the spine which affects our nervous system  (the master control system- ALL health disciplines learn this).  VSC- 慡ubluxation??can be the cause of many symptoms and conditions.

Only  a  Doctor of Chiropractic  will  evaluate  and  treat  for  VSC,   as  well  as  other  pathology.

The course of VSC is highly variable.   Some patients with VSC literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar test findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights.    Some patients immediately develop symptoms related to the VSC,  some patients take years to develop symptoms.  Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months.  Some people recover in days, some take months or years, depending upon severity of the condition.
A subluxation interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system (the master system which controls and coordinates all function within the body) and may cause various other conditions, symptoms and problems.
The Vertebral Subluxation Complex describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal movement patterns and position.  When subluxated, joints are in a stressed, vulnerable, compromised condition.  Subluxation may cause Arthritis, Disk Herniation, or aggravate such conditions.
Vertebral  Subluxation   cannot   be corrected through chemicals (medicine), stretching,  yoga,  vitamins  or  physical  therapy  alone.       Subluxation- a neuro/skeletal/muscular-    mechanical-    problem  requires  a    mechanical correction-  -  -    a manipulation,         best  performed  with  the  chiropractic  adjustment.

Disk   Herniation

Low  Back  Pain  can be caused by many different things.

Big, BAD, catastrophic things like a tumor or a cancer can cause low back pain (only a proper exam by a licensed doctor, like your Doctor of Chiropractic, or your family Doctor of Medicine, can evaluate your signs and symptoms, and perhaps refer for testing).

Big, bad things like a Herniated Disc, sciatica, possible fracture or dislocation can cause LBP (again, best evaluated by your DC or MD, and perhaps referral).

Bad things, like  - Sprains, Strains, contusion, or Vertebral Subluxation Complex (all very efficiently diagnosed and treated by your Doctor Of Chiropractic.   Sometimes LBP is caused by a Herniated disc: Herniated  disk  is  actually  a  quite  common  condition.   However,  the course of the condition is highly variable.   Some patients with a herniated disk literally cannot walk, yet other patients with similar MRI findings may be able to run marathons or lift heavy weights.   Some people suffer for only a few days with pain and symptoms, some people suffer for months. Although the course is highly variable, there are certain steps that are always helpful to follow:  Ice the area when painful-  10/ 15minutes on, 30/ 45 minutes off;  avoid certain postures and movements;  bend the knees when coughing or sneezing;  bend the knees when lifting anything;  do not extend legs straight out when sitting, laying down, lifting, or driving.   Avoiding certain movements and postures will prevent aggravation of the condition.   Practicing good postures and movement patterns will help the condition heal and be less painful. Disk  Herniation  is often caused by, or often  concurrent with the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

         Vertebral   Subluxation   Complex    (a.k.a.  憇ubluxation?
The vertebral subluxation complex is the underlying cause of many healthcare problems.
A subluxation interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system (the master system which controls and coordinates all function within the body) and may cause various other conditions, symptoms and problems.

Subluxation  is  a  serious  condition  identified  by  its  five  parts:
    Spinal Kinesiopathology:
This is fancy way of saying the bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. It restricts your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.
    Neuropathophysiology:
Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nerve system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body.
    Myopathology:
Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm. The resulting scar tissue changes muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.
    Histopathology:
A rise in temperature from an increase in blood and lymph supplies result in swelling and inflammation. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear, or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.
    Pathophysiology:
The VSC contributes to OsteoArthritic degeneration.  Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to malfunction.

P.R.I.C.E. =    P  protection.   R rest.   I  ice.   C  compression.   E  elevation.

Hurt  yourself ??  injury/ trauma/  bruise/ not even sure - - a broken bone ??
You should certainly get to the Doctor or trained health professional to be examined  if you think it  is  bad  enough.     BUT  in  the  meantime,  some  simple  steps  may  help.   PRICE.
The  PRICE  protocol will usually help just about any musculoskeletal injury.

P = Protection;  protect the area from further injury- stop what you are doing, can you
pad  or bandage the area ? Tape the area? Do something to protect the area !
R = Rest;  rest the area as much as possible, if a part is damaged, give the body time to
       repair the area
I = Ice;  ice is a potent anti-inflammatory; it will slow swelling, help with pain control
(ice is analgesic), place ice over cloth over the injured area for 5, 10 minutes, off the
injured area for 30 minutes; then back on again
C = Compression;  to help prevent swelling compression may be helpful- for example
if it is an ankle, wrap the ankle with an ace bandage and ice the area.  Many body
parts may not be applicable to compression.
E = Elevation; again to fight swelling and pain, raising the injured body part above the
heart may be helpful- ie raise an ankle or knee, you lay down, raise the injured part

PRICE  may  help :    Sprains,  Strains,  musculo-skeletal injury,  bruise,  contusion
Sometimes  a slip, trip, fall, heavy lift, athletic injury, or a motor vehicle accident can cause a bump or bruise, sprain or strain.  Sometimes also involved with the injury is a vertebral subluxation (or other joint subluxation) (subluxation is a mechanical problem- of any joint- and requires a mechanical correction).  In the spine, a sprain/strain  is a misalignment,  a 慿ink?in the joint, a stretch of the muscles, tendons and/ or ligaments:- more properly termed a Vertebral Subluxation.   Sometimes symptoms can come immediately, sometimes days, weeks or even months later!- Well after the actual trauma !!!

揚inched  Nerve?

( Also Known As-  neuritis, neuralgia, brachial-neuritis, sciatica )

損inched nerve??is only ?a diagnosis,  WHAT is causing the 憄inch? Your Doctor of Chiropractic will examine and evaluate you to make sure you are not showing signs of neurological damage or disease, tumors, cancers,  severe pathology, perhaps a Herniated Disc, or a Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Sometimes  we  can  wake  up  with  a  憄inched nerve?  or  a  muscle spasm.... sometimes a slip, trip, fall, heavy lift, or even a motor vehicle accident can cause a 憄inched nerve?  Very often -  the true    c a u s e   of  the pinched nerve, painor numbness  in the:    neck and/ or  shoulder  and/ or  arm  and/ or  hand;   pain in the back and/ or   buttock/ hip/ leg/ knee/ foot -  is a misalignment,  a  慿ink?in the neck or back - more properly termed a Vertebral Subluxation.

損inched nerve??is only ?a diagnosis,  WHAT is causing the 憄inch? ?That 損inch?has to be taken care of FIRST!

As the 損inch??the MECHANICAL component of the problem, the CAUSE of the problem is being taken care of  through Chiropractic treatment,   perhaps additional help would speed your return to health:

Nerve Health Support:
-----B complex containing thiamine, folic acid, B-12 and niacin is highly suggested for nerve support.  High dose
B-vitamins should only be taken at the advice of a licensed healthcare professional.
-----B-6 is lower in patients with neuropathy.  Vitamin B-6 reduces the glycosylation that can cause nerve damage.  Amounts greater than 200mg/day can cause neuropathy symptoms.
-----Calcium and magnesium are important for nerve conduction and as muscle relaxants.
-----A multi-vitamin/mineral supplement is suggested for comprehensive support.
-----Essential fatty acids are necessary for nerve health.  Essential fatty acids include omega-3 fatty acids (fish and flax oil) and omega-6 fatty acids (black currant seed oil, borage oil and evening primrose oil).
-----Proteolytic enzymes may be beneficial in neuritis for the inflammation.
-----Lecithin aids in nerve support.
-----Natural herbal remedies including passion flower, valerian, chamomile, scullcap and white willow bark may be helpful.
-----Eat a healthy diet.  Avoid foods that stimulate the nervous system such as caffeine, chocolate, refined sugars, soda pop and cigarettes.
-----Drink plenty of filtered water.
-----Chiropractic care is imperative to remove nerve irritation.
Joint Support:
-----Glucosamine sulfate helps strengthen joint integrity.  Glucosamine is effective in relieving joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.  Glucosamine's pain-relieving effects may be due to its cartilage-rebuilding properties.  These disease-modifying effects are not seen with simple analgesics and are of particular benefit.
-----MSM is known for its pain-relieving properties in such conditions as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, back pain and muscle soreness.  Not many clinical trials have been done using MSM, but clinical observations support the theory that MSM is beneficial in pain managment.
-----White willow is an antiinflammatory and analgesic agent.  White willow was used as far back as the Middle Ages to reduce pain and fevers.  The salicylates found in the white willow bark are responsible for the anti-inflammatory and anti-fever effects.  Acetylsalicylic acid, otherwise known as aspirin, is chemically similar to the salicylates.
-----Boswellia and turmeric (curcumin) are potent antiinflammatory herbs.  Curcumin may have similar action to aspirin.
