QuestionDr. Kulla,
Hello, my name is David. I am an active 20 year old, involved in running, weightlifting, and other sports activities. Over the past year I have battled various kinds of shoulder pain that has kept me from performing certain exercises in the gym. Beginning around June last year I was feeling a sharp, twinging pain in my left shoulder around the joint when performing over-hand pull-ups and other pulling motions. After reading around and getting an injury screening it was pretty clear that I didn't have a rotator cuff tear, but that I had strained the supportive muscles by engaging in activities that put my shoulders under stress at vulnerable angles (pull-ups, military press, etc...). While in the beginning stages of a rehab program that included stretches and rotator cuff exercises, I continued to do many other exercises, during which time I also developed some tightness and burning in the anterior deltoid when doing anterior shoulder raises, bench press, and like exercises. Up to this point the pain had not been in the anterior deltoid and it hadn't felt like a burning sensation.
Most of the pain is gone and I am back to heavy lifting in most muscle groups, but I am still having a burning sensation in my anterior shoulder. Daily life is fine, but I can't bench press, military press, or do any pushing motions without it flaring up. None of the rehab exercises or stretches is doing anything for it. What do I have and what should I do about it? Thank you very much for your time,
-David
AnswerDavid,
Shoulder injuries are difficult to diagnose , especially over the Internet. My first guess would be to check your AC joint (acromio-clavicular) . Again, very difficult to assess online.
If You are located in NYC area I can look at you. If not, tell
Me the city you live In or near and maybe
I can recommend someone.
